For your consideration: GoTitans' pre-draft thoughts on Jake Locker

Jake Locker | goTitans | a Tennessee Titans Fan Forum

He had some serious issues coming out, and pretty much everyone saw it.

Mariota could end up like him, but at this stage, Mariota looks like a much better prospect.

I think the biggest thing that set Locker back was injuries. You could tell that he was making improvements, but he could never actually set together more than a month of football at a time it seems. If Locker hadn't been as injury prone as he was, I wonder what he would have done.

Yeah, Locker could have been good if he wasn't made out of glass.

Interesting....the one post I had was pretty much what I remembered...liked his work ethic, did not think he (nor anyone else that year) was worth a top 10 pick.

I would agree that MM may have better skills coming out, but I still think that we would have been better with a deal on the pick. However, that did not happen, so I am behind him now.

Funny irony is the discussion at the end talking about retrospective review...it hasn't been 5 years, but close. Also funny to read JesseStylex posts again...wow that guy was a moron, but entertaining to read LOL.

definitely. But from looking pre-draft at him, even we saw that he had some real accuracy issues on top of that.

To the point that a lot of us on that thread would have liked to have taken him in the 2nd round or later.. but it was a desperate draft for us, JAX, and MIN.

I didn't know much about Jake coming out and didn't follow Washington at all. What type of offense did he run there? That's my biggest concern with Mariota, is that his skills won't translate from the spread to pro-style. I'm not overly concerned, but if I have one it's that.

I do agree Jake could have been good if he hadn't gotten hurt. two years ago when we started 3-1 I thought we were onto something special. The game against the Jets where he got hurt, he looked incredible.

I don't think MM accuracy 'issues' are nearly as bad as Lockers were. Locker had trouble with even the simplest of routes.

I see the physical comparison...but honestly, nothing else. Mariota is more accurate, he has better stats, less injured, and seems like he has better instinct and command of the field. I liked Locker as a person/his work ethic, but he was a reach at #8 coming out of college honestly. He was VERY inaccurate. The only thing he had better than Mariota was his arm was a bit stronger. I think Mariota has better instinct and on field leadership IMO, and I hope that translates to the NFL.

Looking back on his career, I can't agree with that. He floated up his deep balls so badly, that almost every one was a hail mary, and wasn't stellar at any throw. He was a backup level QB, who got bumped up to the first round (like Gabbert, Ponder, EJ Manuel) due to desperation. Newton was the only true top-level QB prospect at that 2011 draft.

Mariota earned his spot in the early 1st round, IMO. VY did as well, so that's little proof that he will be a success. But I sure hope so.

Jake wasn't wired right to play QB in the NFL, even in college he rarely looked natural throwing. What got him drafted was his arm strength and character. After the Vince Young fiasco Jake Locker looked like the ideal fit in TN, a mobile QB who was mentally strong. Chris Johnson would play off the option game and 2011 and beyond would be 2008 and 2009 on repeat...
