I think Mariota is MUCH more comparable to VY, but I think Mariota is better coming out than VY was. I also think VY could've been a really good QB in the NFL if not for his mental issues.

I know I have heard coutless times "Man, if we could've just put Locker's brain in VYs body ..."

That is basically what MM is (except he is probably smarter than Locker, and a little more polished that VY) ... so even better

If it wasn't for all the injuries, Locker could have been average, at least. Frustrating ups and downs... but ask Cincinnati about that with Dalton.

But, that said... injuries are a huge factor. Mariota doesn't come in with that baggage... Currently.

Exactly. Because it limits the offenses ability to create mismatches and force the defense into a different scheme. Man beaters, cover 2 beaters... The dude could play against soft coverage to the far hash because of his cannon arm. Aaaaaand nothing really else.

Mariota from what has been said and what I have read about has a mental gift for playing QB. Take into account his attitude Bd humbleness , I have been impressed. Also that we are modifying the offense to help him be successful .

Mariota is definitely a superior prospect to Locker by far

Possibly, but you have to go with what is known..

    Final year in College stats:

    Mariota:
    68.3% completion pct
    4454 yards passing
    42 TD 4 INT
    181.7 passer rating

    Locker:
    55.4% completion pct
    2265 yards passing
    17 TDs 9 INT
    124.2 rating

In his best year (Jr year) he had 21 TDs, 11 int.

Locker always showed that he struggled with accuracy. I know Mariota was cushioned a bit due to the amount of screens he ran, but Locker always had higher INT numbers.

Let's see VY's numbers in passing:

    65.2%
    3036 yards
    26TD 10 INT
    163 passer rating

Mariota is undoubtedly the best college passer this franchise has seen since the move from Houston.

Odds are, if you have accuracy issues in college, they will continue (l0cker)

If you have a deficient throwing motion, it will come to bite you in the NFL (VY)

And of course the attitude issues come to the forefront in the NFL. That is a large part of what doomed VY in the NFL. No work ethic, and a whiny attitude.

Certainly Mariota is not a lock for a successful NFL QB, but this is the best shot the Titans have ever had of drafting one. He is the first low pick QB they've drafted without some serious mechanical/accuracy flaws, to date.

Mariota is the best prospect at QB we've had, in any major passing statistic. Not that it's the end-all-be-all of it, but it's the best thing we've got to go off of.

One thing is for sure, if you draft a guy based on one game, it will end badly. If VY/Jamarcus Russell had failed in their shining college moments, they may not have been so highly hyped.. Mariota is hyped because of his career to this point.

I couldn't find where I posted in that Locker thread but I do remember liking the pick for the simple fact that we needed a QB. New QB is exciting so no one should be surprised when the common sentiment among fans is excitement when the team drafts one in the first round.

Mariota is the guy so fans might as well get on board and hope for the best. If he ends up busting out then by all means say "I told ya so". But no need to go on and on about it before he's even seen the practice field.

I clearly loved the pick. But trying to be objective here, I do think there is legitimate reason to be more excited about this pick than the VY pick and certainly the Locker pick. Mariota kinda seems like a combination of the best qualities of both.... the playmaking ability of VY and the character of Locker.

He certainly could still bust but I'm gonna remain super pumped until I see him go out there and stink up the joint with my own eyes.

Mariota's mechanics aren't much better. He throws off his back foot, across his body, etc as much as VY did.

As for the hard work/mental parts of it. No one knew that about Vince until he started losing. Mariani hasn't faced adversity yet. He could crumble the same way.

I've said before I like Mariota's numbers, but boy if there ever was a case of system/team around a player...
I'd say it's pretty fair to assume that had MM played on Washington those years his numbers would be different.

And in regard to VY, numbers aside - that kid did whatever it took to get Texas a win. It was amazing stuff. Unfortunately in the NFL, better football minds figured him out pretty quickly. Those semantics work against MM as well.

In the end, I love that MM isn't a me-first Chad Ocho-Stinko type douchebag.
I just worry about the unknown in facing the Whiz-old school approach.
