The new CBA virtually guarantees what the rookie contracts are and Id guess it is similar for UDFA's in that there simply on limits with what they can do. Not like you can sign him to a 7th rnd money contract but offer him several million in bonuses for say, starting 14 games or something like that. Can't do it I dont think. So ball is in his court whether he wants to sit and learn on a contender or go to a team that needs him to start right away.

Right, but there almost has to be some sort of stipulation involving this.

Yep. If we wanted to sit out a year then re-enter next year, then the Agent was extremely stupid for saying what he did. It basically forced teams to take him off the draft board (and by default denies his player a chance at re-entering).

However, like others have mentioned, he could spin this into a good thing long term.

1st, if he sits out this year, he makes NO money for an entire year ... getting UDFA money is better than nothing.

2nd, If he does decide to sit out a year and re-enter then what is the likelihood that he gets taken in the 1st round? After a year of sitting out of football, teams would likely be very hesitant to spend a 1st rd pick on him. Esp when there is a fresh class of OL that didn't sit out for a year.

3rd, like others have mentioned, the rookie pay scale would limit how much he can make AND have him tied up in a contract for 4-5 years ... Most players make the BIG money on their 2nd contracts anyway. If Collins could renegotiate in 2 years as a UDFA, then he would really be speeding up his timeline for that big payday. And also (since this is a 1st rd talent, not your typical UDFA) getting a big payday just 2 years into your contract means you would still be pretty young when it is time for your 3rd contract ... he could get 2 big deals out of this by speeding up his timeline.

So he could have either sat for 1 year making 0 money, entered the draft next year and still probably end up a 2nd or 3rd round pick and then be locked into that contract for 4-5 years.

    OR

He could play now (and make money now) and get a big pay day in 2 years (likely more than he would be making in a 1st rd rookie contract). Also setting him up for an earlier 3rd contract as well.

and he gets to choose his team to boot ... it could really work out for him. Maybe he agent is a genius.

And to this point, look at a guy like DGB ... I have heard some analysts say that he is a 'top 10 talent' but sitting out a year (and discipline issues) caused him to fall to #40

BUT DGB had 1 thing working for him. He was still in a college football program and was still working out and practicing as such. Still able to go against people in drills, learn the plays, ect. He just couldn't showcase it on Saturdays in games.

Maybe I am wrong, but if Collins sat out a year, he would not have that luxury. Since he entered the draft, he wouldn't be able to go back to school and participate in a college program. So teams really wouldn't know what the hell he was doing for the last year (was he on the couch eating chips every day, or busting his ass in the weight room)

I am pretty sure this is not an option, as the NFL said that he cannot re-enter the draft next year. The only option he now has is to sign and UDFA contract or go play in Canada for a year. He cannot be drafted in an NFL draft at this point. It looks like he will now choose a team to sign with (I heard he would decide today), play out a two year contract, and then sign his second contract after that--for the money he is likely worth.

Here is the link confirming that he can't enter the Draft again in the future

I understand that he cannot re-enter the draft now ... I was simply pointing out how he might be better off now than if he had gone the route of getting drafted late and sitting out a year and trying to re-enter.

People were saying he was the most unlucky person, but he could turn this to his advantage.

OK, that makes sense--sorry for the misunderstanding. I am not sure this is better than a first round pick that he could have been, but I agree that there are some positives here that he could take advantage of.

I'd be lying if I said I was comfortable with our o-line situation. The kid from Utah looks ok, but I just would hate to roll with either Byron if he gets hurt. Plus, I'm pretty sure we were targeting the Wisconsin tackle before St. Louis took him just before us and the Utah kid was our fall back option.

It would be huge if we could sign Collins. There's really no risk in it for us. If he screws up or has screwed up and evidence comes out against him, we simply cut him and are only out UDFA money. If he clears his name and can come into the league and play, I think he's easily the best RT on the team immediately. Wyatt said it's not happening with the Titans, but it would be nice.

You have to feel for the kid (sounds like he did nothing wrong) and went undrafted for no reason. Loses out on millions.
