I agree with all this. Expectations were set way too high. The bottom line is the roster was very low on talent and we implemented new systems on both sides of the ball. Not saying that necessarily justifies 2-14, but we as fans probably should've done a better job of keeping our expectations realistic.

I still believe in Whis as a HC. But for his sake this team needs to show marked improvement. With each passing year without success there are gonna be more and more pitchforks out there.

I don't see this draft as a "sham" at all. Did business factor into it? I have no doubt. I've been saying it would for months and months. But that's just common sense and I think it would've been a factor for any franchise in our shoes. But let's at least acknowledge this as a possibility..... it is entirely possible that the FO both loved Marcus Mariota on the field AND also loved what he brings to the table from an excitement and ticket sales standpoint. It doesn't have to be one or the other. In fact, that might actually explain why we had such a high asking price for the pick.

As for hoping he pans out, well that's all you really can do with a 1st round QB... whether he's a pocket passer or a "running QB" or whatever. Those sure thing slam dunks only seem to come along about once a decade.

Probably not the public, but maybe media. Whiz hasn't been a fan of fans seeing them practice for some reason.
Jim Wyatt just tweeted out that most of the rookie mini camp is closed to media. Media will only be able to see the rookies stretch and individual drills on Friday.

I think the reason this might be changing is because of the huge emphasis that has been put on us finding an identity.

I am on the fence like most fans. This kid has football smarts, is a good leader, (although quiet as hell), and has the mechanics\athleticism\wheels. I think it will come down to 3 things:
    • O' line protection
    • Chemistry with receivers
    • The playbook for him
We are still hurting a bit on defense, but Searcy, Orakpo, and Cox under LeBeau's system should raise them from the basement. I see Mariota as a cross between Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick. It will be fun to watch either way. Glad we did not draft Fowler.

Here is my issue with the pick, and truthfully, I don't have as big of an issue with Mariota specifically as much as I do with the Titans picking him.

First, the idea of a franchise quarterback in 2015. Current Franchise QBs in my book are (In no particular order):

    Drew Brees
    Andre Luck
    Eli Manning
    Peyton Manning
    Phillip Rivers
    Aaron Rogers
    Ben Rothlesburger
    Tom Brady

These are guys that, in my opinion, are plug and play into any franchise, and they immediately improve the franchise and the QB situation is set. The next level are people I think most would consider a franchise QB as well, but in my mind, they are not plug and play. They need a certain system, or a good defense or something, where if they were to be put tomorrow on another team, I'm not sure they would be as successful as they are on their current team.

    Russel Wilson
    Joe Flacco
    Mathew Stafford
    Matt Ryan
    Tony Romo
    Cam Newton
Kaepernick (Ill include him here, but my gut is telling me he's a backup within the next 24 months)

My thoughts here are meant to judge the QBs this is my opinion I could be wrong on a few and Im sure everyone has their own thoughts. My point is, Not even half the league has QBs who people would say are stable. Certainly guys like dalton, cutler, and Palmer are starters, etc but a few bad games and that would change drastically. Certainly some of the younger guys Bridgewater, Carr, Bortles could climb the ladder here over the next few years, but we will see guys like brees and manning retire, so really half the league will typically be good at the QB position, with around 7 to 10 teams having a solid franchise qb.

The rest are looking for one badly. So here are the titans. They take Mariota and their stance publicly is they believe he is a franchise QB. He is the QB for the next 10 to 15 years they say.

So, I look at my little roster of franchise QBs and I think hmm, does Mariota compare to any of them NO. Do any analysts say he looks like he might be like any of them? NO

OK, well, perhaps he is his own man. As a QB, what do analysts say? Well some say he will be good, some say he doesn't stand a chance some are wait and see. Heard that with Locker. Heard that with VY. Hear that every year. Heard that with Ponder, Bortles, every single QB Taken that has busted or flames out.

You know who I didn't hear that about? Manning, Luck. Even guys like brees, rivers, rogers took a while to be anointed, but still, people weren't running around saying why would you take a shot on drew brees? or rivers?

I guess my ultimate point is that, there are no sure things, qbs are hard to judge, but the ones who end up being elite guys, outside of brady being drafted in the 6th round, aren't really bewildering. They are few and far between yes, one every 5 years or so, with some decent qbs in between, but there isn't too much guess work involved in most of the guys. The titans have no system, have a horrible defense, have a coach with a horrible track record and win/loss record, and they selected a guy who have analysts split down the middle, coming from a school and system that has never brought up an elite level NFL QB.

This has somehow rejuvenated the fan base. Rejuvenated the fanbase why? Because they are telling us its a franchise QB? Im supposed to listen to the guys that went 2 and 14? How can the Tennessee Titans fans look at Mariota and think FINALLY?? I don't get it.

There was much less risk and guesswork sitting on the bench with Mettenberger. If you want to flip a coin, Mett has a better chance than Mariota based on luck of the draw, based on chance. Now we get this kid in here, and unless he is a lot better than most people think, he is going to fail, and its going to take YEARS for them to get the fans back excited again. My lord. Im supposed to be excited because they told me to be lol. good one titans.

Im not excited, this kid is going to have to overcome a horrible team, and take everything on his back, and be better than andrew luck in order to quote turn the franchise around, and most people have a hard time seeing this guy be a halfway decent nfl qb let alone a guy to do all that.

Hasn't even played a single snap yet.

You know nothing of what the future holds for him and neither do I. Could be a future HoFer and could be a huge bust.

I just don't get being overly negative and wah-wah about it. You're never gonna find your franchise QB if you're afraid to take a shot. And if you are gonna sit around waiting on the next "sure thing" QB to come along AND for you to be in the position to draft him when he does..... well good luck. You're gonna be waiting awhile.

Mett has a better chance than Mariota? LOL okay then......

MM is not a one year wonder. He thrived in the system he was in like no other. His stats are off the charts. No he has not played in a pro offense, but who says he can't do it. Nobody knows yet. Our front office made that decision because they feel he is a franchise QB. They scouted him and searched every thing about him they could. Yes their jobs depend on it. Give him a chance especially when you don't know yet.

It's hit or miss with any player and any QB. The Titans decided to take a shot on Mariota. As a fan, you can sit back and see how it unfolds or you can not watch the team play on Sunday... Pretty simple.

People didn't see greatness coming from Rodgers, Brady and Brees when they were drafted. That's almost half of the elite QBs you listed. Romo, Cam, Wilson, and Kaep were all question marks coming out of college. That's over half of your second tier QBs. In total half of the the guys you named were thought to be question marks as NFL QBs. But somehow you have come to the conclusion that guesswork isn't involved for most of those guys which I don't get.

Yes there were negatives with lots of them. Brees was too short and not a strong enough arm. Rodgers was a system QB. Mcnair came from lower level competition etc. . You need a Qb, better get the best one you can and pray a lot. They all have issues. Some are teases like Locker, Dalton, Kapernick, Cutler, etc. I like the character and makeup of MM. If have drafted JW, I would have been really upset. Glad things worked like they did.
