Let me start off by saying i am a big fan of Mariota as well as Mett. I like both a lot however i think Mariota has a chance to be something special as long as Whisenhunt lets him play through the good stretches and bad stretches. If Whisenhunt yanks him out after a couple bad games i'll be pissed. You have to let QB's especially rookies learn from their mistakes. If he isn't sure about Mariota then play Mett the first part of the year. I just want the coach to pick one QB and stick with him. This is my biggest fear with Whisenhunt he is too damn impatient. Anyone else have this feeling Whisenhunt will toy with the QB position too much for his own good? Every year he ends up playing three or four different QB's and switches them in and out at the first sign of struggles. I just hope he doesn't mess up Mariota from progressing into a good QB.......

If he starts Mariota, he needs to stick with him unless an injury happens. I think he has learned that by now.

I think the short answer is "no."

I think the long answer is "hell no."

I think management, whoever that may be, has to understand this is more than likely a lost year with a rookie QB starting. They have to be willing to take the lumps that come along with starting a rookie QB, otherwise they shouldn't have drafted him.

I think Whisenhunt will ride or die with Mariota. He's played the QB Carousel game too many times, it's time he sticks it out with the guy he thinks gives him the best chance to win...

Yeah if you are gonna hand the job to the rookie then you gotta be willing to ride and die with him for the entire year.

Barring injury, Mariota needs to start all 16 games, regardless of how bad he plays.

It's a given that Mariota will have some super rough weeks, but it's up to the coaching staff to fully support him, no matter what. The last thing we need is a fragile rookie QB, because that's a recipe for disaster.

I used to think coaches learned from their mistakes.. that was before I discovered the world was full of coaches that will ride their busted philosophy until the wheels fall off.. then they'll grind the axles as long as they can

2 things. First, Mariota needs to be ready to start week 1 and that means he'll get the vast majority of reps in otas, training camp, pre-season. But even with all those reps there is no guarantee he's ready. If he's not ready to run the offense, don't throw him out there just because he was the second pick in the draft and you said you would. Be smart!

Now, knowing how fast Mariota learns, how hard he prepares and with that number of reps and installing some of the offense he already knows, he SHOULD be ready.

Also, unlike what he did with our we'd last year, we really need to pound the rock and not dump it at the first sign of trouble or down a td. And our play calling has to be smart and on the conservative side until he feels comfortable running the system.

Whiz's aim should be to try and make him like Russell Wilson this year - efficient, not overly burdened, and free to make big plays as they develop or the defense over adjusts. Pound the rock, control the clock, play good D, and sustain drives.

But to answer the question, I agree with - if you start him, you let him play aka Peyton. A lot of wb's need a full year under their belt to get comfortable with the system and playing at NFL speed. Let him take his lumps as a rookie so he'll be that much better in year 2.
