The timing has to be just right with when you have a solid team and when you pay your franchise QB. Not many teams have the luxury of a franchise QB and a solid team that isn't highly paid at the same time. For example, Seattle had a solid young team when Wilson came along and it equalled success...

What happens when the time comes that all these guys want large contracts? The team gets dismantled and you hope you get more young talent to replace them.

Take Joe Flacco for instance. In 2012 he was the Superbowl MVP. He then signs a $120M contract making him the highest paid player ever.

The following year (2013) was his worst year statistically in his career. He threw a career high ints and career low TDs. He also missed the playoffs for the 1st time ever ... maybe it was due to a drop off in talent after paying him? (not sure, just speculation)

    Or how about Dalton?

He signed a $115M contract after the 2013 season. Then he goes on to throw his lowest TD total and 2nd highest int total in 2014. And almost 1000 less yards than he did the year before ... was it due to lack of talent after signing the contract?

Both are still good QBs. Ravens/Bengals are probably better off having them than not having them ... BUT, there is a drop off in production right after they sign. It could be that they are the same QB with less talent.

Yes. Watching Wilson will be very interesting after he signs his mega contract ... he has benefited from a great RB and D more than anyone.

I could definitely see him having a dramatic drop off after he signs a big deal.

Its also a scary prospect though as well ... what if Mariota becomes a great QB? We will face the same fate if we have to pay him $150M in 5 years.

I think the Colts know they are going to be hurting after they sign Luck to that contract. They think their window is now while his contract is low, hence the signing of a bunch of old guys.

I like Wilson a lot.. But this is a team sport. He has benefited a lot from just the right combination at the right time.

The Seahawks have drafted well and could keep it up though. But there are only so many big contracts you can hand out. that means the more great young players you have, the more that walk when its time to pay up.

Yep. Every franchise guys contract 1 ups the lasts guys contract these days. You have to build a solid team and win while the small window is open.

Few teams have the sustained success that the Patriots have had. Even then it took Brady what, 10 years between the last 2 superbowls?

And even Seattle is a rare feat. If things don't click right, RW might never see the Superbowl again after all the success he's had in just a couple of seasons.

Just read this over on PFT:

The Dolphins are spending a lot of money to win now and will worry about the salary cap implications later: The Dolphins were big spenders in free agency and have signed so many players to so many big contracts that they’re projected to be a whopping $21 million over the cap next year.

Basically, they are blowing their load this year, and then it's cap hell for them.

Its not as bad as it seems, the cap is expected to rise every year, what looks messy today could be nothing next March... IDK why theyre in win now mode tho, pretty young team. Tannehill 26, Miller 24, Landry 22, Stills 23, Cameron 26, whats the rush? All those guys are signed thru 2017 (3 season from now)

I know what it must be, theyre afraid of the great Garopollo taking over in New England...
