The UFC really needs to cut out wrestling moving forward.

    This.

Just saw this thread, kind of wish I didn't.

I was an all state wrestler (3rd place) in Tennessee, and have coached 2 middle school medalists since then.

It's no coincidence that all American wrestlers win UFC belts... It's the most useful martial art that isn't a martial art.

"But wrestling is gay, it involves touching other dudes".

It's also probably the most demanding sport on the planet. And one of the most competitive.

Been out of wrestling for 5 years. Been to 2 MMA/BJJ gyms and a few TKD places. None have done anything even half as hard as wrestling practice.

@GeronimoJackson back in the day the MIXED part of MMA meant putting different martial arts against each other.

Now everyone is a hybrid MMA guy with some tools in everything.

and yeah I am certain you can find exceptions.

I liked the old way better but these new guys are much better fighters than the stricter/narrower/whatever old school fighters

Wrestling has always had a reputation for the hardest training. That doesn't make it more interesting with the fan.

My issue with wrestling is a judging system that places too much emphasis on being on top. I don't know how many fights I've watched when the guy on the bottom is doing damage with punches and elbows and making serious sub attempts, but loses a decision because they were taken down.

I get that, and I'm not going to lie to you and say that watching someone get layed on for an entire fight is exciting.

But I take exception with people thinking it takes no skill.

Wrestling, when it comes down to it, is doing something that your opponent knows is coming but still can't stop it.

Which is why guys like Hendricks and Wiedman (sp) can come in and get belts. If they can take someone down and keep them down on a wrestling mat, it is going to be even easier against a guy who isn't a wrestler.

I agree and disagree with parts of this posts. Yes, wresting is definitely a tough sport to train for both mentally and physically. People who say wrestling is gay are immature.

On the other hand, it's super boring to watch in an MMA fight between two wrestlers. If I wanted to watch wrestling, I'd watch greco-olympic wrestling at a college that barely draws any fans. I don't know the solution, it's the equivalant of football coaches who run the ball every play. Yes, you can win with brute strength, but my god, its awful to watch.

Yeah, I agree with all of that.

    Edit

I enjoy watching wrestling, but only because I am a wrestler.

    It isn't entertaining.

Sports are supposed to be entertaining. That's the fault with MMA. It rarely is.

eeeh lots of reasons why some fights are less than caged lightning

could put a time limit on matt activity and force them to stand up?

but when the action is against the cage that can be some of the best action of the night or just guys trying to foot stomp each other
