I hear you. I'm certainly not "hot" about it. Just personally do not agree with it.

In 99.9 of other instances I would agree.

Well you obviously have a strong opinion as a musician yourself. I just think we have a real problem today with people not respecting others products/services/IP and just taking whatever they want without feeling obligated to shell out a dime. You can disagree with Spotify's business model but bottom line is they are offering a service you are using. And I am assuming the musicians/labels have willingly chosen to participate in that service and are compensated (even if it may not be nearly enough), correct?

Phil is an icon in Ireland. I just visited his statue in Dublin.
Singer/Bass Player for Thin Lizzy. Known for his smokey voice and wild stage stature. He was a true rock star.

If you are a musician and you want digital distribution it's tricky at best to avoid getting Pimped by Spotify, Google (youtube) or Pandora etc.
It's either attempt to micro manage your materials or end up going with an all-in-one digital distro like Iota.
If you attempt to do it all yourself and you have coveted material you're stuff will get pirated and end up for free in all the shady corners of the internet and make nothing.
If you choose Iota, they will make your stuff available to Spotify and Youtube, which will neutralize the pirating mostly but then you'll have to sell your material and bands will again make nothing.
Spotify, Google and Iota will of course get a nice cut - and the musician will get an nth of that. It's a ******, unavoidable deal.

Interesting. Still, seems to me that the ultimate evil in that whole equation is pirating rather than companies like Spotify and Pandora. They are offering an avenue for distribution that, while not ideal, is still apparently considered the best option in the eyes of most musicians. And without the pirates, the musicians would not be "forced" to go through those channels.

Personally, in the grand scheme of things I don't view gaming Spotify's free-trial system as being all that radically different from pirating MP3's directly. At the end of the day you're still getting a product/service, for which you should be paying, for nothing.... or next to nothing. So I just have a hard time being okay with one and not the other.

I do understand where you're coming from though.

I've been using Spotify Premium for almost a year now and absolutely love it. I use it for 5-6 hours a day. Worth every penny in my opinion.

The way the market is today- spotify isn't going to be what breaks you as an artist. Unless you're massive. Basically, you have to either be doing little-- or a ton for it to matter. If you're in the middle, you're all bueno.

Just like napster was never going to hurt anyone, really.

There's a reason that these very established artists are pushing spotify so much- and it's not because it's hurting them.

Bottom line is that physical music is devalued to the point of the actual music delivery method having more game than any of the art they deliver (or potentially could deliver).
As much as Spotify loses points for making all the $ from transactions of other people's material at least it's not as bad a YouTube/Google who turns that material into a carrier pigeon for ads that only YouTube makes money off of.
The material's owner loses and the listener loses because every damn tune has a 15 second preroll ad.
