There is more than one hippodrome. You are referring to a specific Hippodrome "The Hippodrome of Constantinople"

A hippodrome in general though comes from ancient Greece. It was a stadium for horse racing and chariot racing. In Greek hippos = horse and dromos = course ... so horse course lol. But there were multiple hippodromes in Ancient Greece and rome.

In any case though, naming the Stadium a "hippodrome" would make no sense at all. People want to call it that just because it originated in Ancient Greece, but it is wrong as Hippodrome literally means horse track.

Why would we call our stadium a horse track?

I like it! But I still prefer the one with reagan riding a velocirapter, or teddy Roosevelt fighting sasquatch.

They're finally calling it a stadium, we're moving on up, huh?

Yeah but the Greeks and Romans were intertwined throughout history, that's why you hear the term "Greco-Roman" (and why everyone except the Greeks and Romans were considered barbarians). Some of the best preserved Greek ruins are actually in Paestum Italy and even on Sicily.

Maybe name it "Olympia Stadium" after one of the original stadiums in Olympia Greece where the Olmpics were held and dedicated to the Greek God Zeus for real authenticity?

Or they could name it the " Panathenaic Stadium" after the stadium build in Athens around 330BC and the site where the 2004 Olympics were held.

The Greeks invented Western Civilization as we know it today, that's a know fact and to suggest otherwise is just plain ignorant. Science, advanced mathematics, astrology, structured education system, the Olympics, engineering, drama, literature, art, just to name a few.

I always say my ancestors were building grand civilizations while the rest of the world was still living in straw huts and swinging from trees (some still are). Without the Greeks and later the Romans there would be no Western Civilization. Don't be jealous, just enjoy it...and maybe say thank you....and I'll say you're welcome..lol!
