    yeah...

his agent outsmarted the Titans and put the 'can't be franchised next year' language before he would let FA sign

Didn't read the letter but he should probably tell himself to not drive his Ferrari recklessly and paralyze people.

But he is selfish so I doubt that crossed his mind.

I actually think the letter is pretty well done. I found it interesting while reading about the different transitions in his life and events that led to head scratching moments for the fans.

In any case, he seems very contempt with where he is in life and love him or hate him, that's a very good thing. I think the fall from fame and glory for many of these players is a lot more harsh than what the public really identify with. Glad for him he found a passion outside of football and he's happy with where he ended up. I'd never knock anyone for self reflecting.

I agree with that....I like the comment at the end about being happy with hanging drywall.

It is really sad to see these guys get suckered by "friends" with their money....happens far too often IMO.

That said, I still wish that this maturity would have come about 10 years ago.....

My kids friends dad is in the business of babysitting pro athletes, he has so many sad stories about guys ruining their lives after becoming rich overnight. Says very few listen to their agents and managers and just blow it all.

ESPN once reported 75% of retired athletes go bankrupt a year after leaving the league, he says it's more like 90%. That's terrible that all these guys playing are too dumb to figure out how to make tens of millions of dollars work.

FWIW the rapper known as DMX is all set tho, hes got 24 baby mama's he pays child support to but thanks to a sound financial plan he will never be broke..
Hard to imagine of all the famous guys out there, it's DMX whos ahead of the game..

Hmm, I don't know if this is up to date or not according to these sites:

DMX Net Worth - File For Bankruptcy
DMX Net Worth - The Rapper That Fails His Duty

    DMX networth is negative $10M.

In any case, it may seem crazy to most people regarding how these guys blow millions of dollars. However, it's really not as head scratching as most people think. We compare these guys to most of us who are of sound financial mind, and that is our mistake. We have years of practice struggling financially during our young adult lives. For most of us it's right after high school or college, but the rest of us right after we land that first full-time job. During those years we build up discipline to learn how to budget our money and how to invest. We may make many mistakes while doing this, but many of us learn from those mistakes as we start learning what works and what doesn't. My point is, we take our lumps and we learn this early on. By the time we earn our higher incomes we already developed a sound financial base and educated ourselves in good financial management practices. Simply put, over the years we became smarter, learned moderation, and matured. So yes to our mature selves some things such as money management just seems like common sense.

Now reverse this scenario and you have your average pro athlete. These kids are immature and most have never been educated in financial management. You hand them millions of dollars at a point in their life where many of them are ill equipped to handle that level of cash injection into their daily lives. What does a two year old do when you give them candy? They eat it...all of it! Kids only learn moderation as they mature. We all become slaves to our possessions in that the more we finance things the harder we have to work to maintain them. Unfortunately by the time the average pro-athlete learns this, they've lost their high-end salaries. This leaves them in a state where their liabilities exceeds their assets and why most declare bankrupt.

In truth, most people don't even know their net worth. According to USA Today (Typical net worth by age: Where do you stand? the average american under the age of 35 years old is worth less than $7K. If you break those numbers down by demographics, you will find that the average net worth of most Hispanics & African Americans is negative. The fact that these guys go bankrupt...well that's only because their liabilities are so much higher than the average American due to creditors handing kids black cards without teaching them moderation! These guys really don't understand that by the time their incomes start to decrease they can not afford to keep up with even the minimal payments.

The incomes of the average Joe, you and me, tend to go up as we age whereas with athletes it decreases. Ultimately, this topic just exposes a big problem in professional sports and one that I personally hope gets addressed. These guys have millions at their disposal. Imagine what they could do for this country if they invested in businesses and created jobs instead of buying depreciating assets?

That's just my opinion on the topic anyway...

I don't get you guys. I often read post about former player and it seems a little racist. Whenever it's a person of color he is dumb, lazy, or something extra negative. Al was a beast for us and what he said made a lot of sense. He knows he made a mistake. Swartz system worked wonders Jason Jones, Ford, Babin, shoot KVB all looked great. Look at Kearse. He left the system and was horrible. He went to Detroit and there line was instantly better. You think if Fat Al would've got paid here you think he would've quit? Why? If he would've signed with the Colts that year and murdered us twice a year... All yall would be hating.... If Tom Brady was with the Raiders would you pick them to win a Super Bowl? System means alot

He failed a conditioning test that your average middle aged dad with bad knees could pass. Failed it multiple times.

    Was it the system then?

He was dumb. He stomped on a guys head. That's something dumb people do.

He was lazy. Aforementioned conditioning test. Gave no effort in Washington.

If you are only willing to play hard for one coach, and mail it in for your career after you get paid, that doesn't speak well for your character.

Also, JS had been gone for a year when Babin had his big season.
