You know, we had the #2 overall pick for a pretty long time now. Maybe it would have made sense if while we were doing our homework on not just MM... but any of the players projected to go top 10.. Figure out exactly how they're gonna approach sealing a contract.

And yes there was a possibility of a trade at that point - but you should always assume that you're going to make a selection - better to be safe than sorry.

Another possibility that we wouldn't be aware of that could be causing the hardline stance by Underwood and the Titans could be language in previous contracts that stipulate a favored nations clause - i.e., if anyone (in this case Mariota) isn't subject to the offset, then others might have language in their deals that would cause their terms to change as well. Under those circumstances it wouldn't be just setting a future precedent but would in fact be a trigger to changes to other players' contracts.

    good point

back in the day there was a QB, I forget the name, that had a clause guranteeing he would be the highest paid QB on the team. Team drafted, Ill say Marino - I really cant remember. Said QB did not enforce that clause, but he did get another signing bonus as the club had to renegotiate his contract - lol

I think that would have come out by now if that was the case. At this point, they need to sign him, but considering camp is still a week and a half away or so it isnt that big deal yet. If he isnt signed by opening day of camp, then management has some serious issues that need to be addressed immediately.

Agents also handle endorsements. Mariota might be the most marketable person in the draft at this point, so no reason he shouldnt have an agent.
