I measure a QB's worth on a few things, winning being one of the last of them. Football is so much of a team game you cant measure one players success on how the other 22-23 produce, at least I usually dont.

I have a thread somewhere out there about what do you look for in a QB, thats the best place to read how I personally judge them.

Ill see if I can dig it up..

They should be measured by all of the above. Terry Bradshaw has 4 rings and yet no one even contemplates him as a top 10 QB. Marino on the other hand, had perhaps the greatest statistical career but has no rings which a lot of people knock HIM for. And it is quite ironic that since Elway now has a ring, he is seen as being better when he didn't even though he nearly singlehandedly carried his teams to the SB only to be blown out because his teams weren't good. When the team carried him and he could Phil Simms it, he was better?

One probably doesn't have to look past the comparison between Eli and Peyton to see where people are on this subject. Eli is 2-0 in the SB with 2 rings. That puts him in some rarified air. But his regular season stats typically are bleh. But more often than not, Eli can play very well (within his system) in the playoffs and SB, but he can't carry the team.

Peyton on the other hand, has a lot of regular season statistical records but only 1 ring and a couple of losses and he didn't play like Peyton in the one game they won. Like Eli, his defense had more to do with it or other players on offense. For most of Peyton's career he had pretty poor stats in the playoffs (like record setting bad) but has rebounded some on that. But even still, leading the greatest offense in statistical history and setting single season records for a QB, they got wrecked in the SB.

So do you count regular season wins, stats, playoff appearances, win %, rings, performance in big games despite the outcome, blah blah blah? Most people cherry pick stats to point to their favorite player or who they want to be the best QB in history and the argument can be made.

For me, it comes down to performance. Montana is what? 4-0 in the SB? He led a game winning drive to win a SB with seconds left and never turned in a bad performance in the big game. The guy most overlooked is Marino. Much like Elway, he carried his teams and the context for his stats are lost on most fans. Most fans just look at #'s and records and fail to realize Peyton Manning played under VERY DIFFERENT rules than Marino did. When Manning played against the Pats and the Pats db's 'mugged' his wr's, he had a miserable day. Well guess what, that's how Marino played most of his career and broke almost every QB record there is. Marino also had to deal with some great defensive inovation (46 D) and some of the best defensive players in modern history (LT for example). For me, perhaps the difference is, I was old enough to watch these guys play and appreciate what they could do on the field.

So make a reasoned (or unreasoned) opinion...rings, stats, wins...whaddaya like?

Of course, but that's pure happen-stance in his situation.

He's simply been ok enough at the right times to not lose Super Bowls.

    Coaching and surrounding players.

    Hardly Eli's mediocre abilities.
