That's fair for being outschemed in terms of preparing for a certain type of offense or defense...but tackling has nothing to do with scheme. Playing a rookie RT who has whiffed on a pass rusher because he gets off balance (his problem in college too) and gets Mariota crushed goes to coaching. Poutasi can take reps with the 2nd unit until he fixes his balance issue but I'm not willing to give up 2 free hits on Mariota a game from a rookie RT who has technique issues to clean up. And that's just one v one play. Wait 'til we see more exotic stunts and blitzes...how many more shots is Mariota gonna take? Or, you'll force him to run for his life which also hurts his development.

If you're gonna start Poutasi there, I better see him have help on any drop longer than 3 steps. I don't see why they havent given Meridith a shot. He's the highest graded OL for me out of the 1's and 2's. Not sure how he'll stack up against 1's, but I bet him at LG with Bell at RT gets Mariota hit less and improves our blocking consistency. Worth a try anyway.

The other concern for me is how Whiz will integrate the Read Option into his playcalling. That offense is scheme built upon scheme. We run this play, when you counter with this, we hit you with that...both in run and passing game. I fear Whiz will call it a couple of times a game just to make teams gameplan for it. I HOPE he will have full play progressions (Inside Zone Read...when countered leads to play #2...when countered leads to play #3...etc).

Unfortunately, I have learned to be skeptical of what this coach tells me he'll do vs what he'll actually do. I hope we see the Whiz we thought we were getting in year one. But he better protect Mariota or he'll get knocked out followed by Mett getting hurt and it'll be the CW show and everyone saying if we had Mariota for the whole season, we would have made the playoffs. But that's a no go for me. The fans have been better GM's in how to rebuild this OL than our GM. If the OL gets Mariota hurt...goodbye Webster. If Whiz doesn't have a real positive impact on the team, playcalling, and offense...

I too am skeptical of Whisenhunt and the coaches, but sometimes, if a player doesn't perform, it's not the coaches fault.

They can teach Zach Brown how to tackle, but the only one who can actually control if he makes the tackle is Zach Brown.

Same goes for th blocking, with a rookie RT he is going to have mistakes and misread plays. Unfortunately, that's not good news for Mariota. The only person who can control that is Poutasi.

It's not always the coaches fault when a player isn't performing. It could be simply, that the player isn't very good, and doesn't retain information well. (That one wouldn't surprise me with Brown at all.)

Yes, but it's up to the coaches to get them to play how they are supposed to (ZB to tackle well and Poutasi to block well) or you play someone else.

It's the same with Griff being a mediocre S the last several years but being paid like a Pro Bowler. Griff is what he is. It's on the HC and GM to replace him with a better player. Same with playing Levitre the last 2 seasons.

If ZB has one poor game, that's on the player. If he proves over games he can't tackle and the coaches leave him there...it's on them.

Great coaches put players in the best position for them to succeed. Are we doing that?

Right now, Whiz appears more over his head than Munch ever did. He doesn't seem to me to be the kind of coach who will call a game to suit the strengths of his talent (as limited as it is) which points to being stubborn.

His in-game adjustments have been horrible as well. I don't think the players particularly enjoy playing for him either (just a vibe). I'm seeing poor fundamentals on the field as well (again, can be due to the lack of talent).

I wasn't a fan from the get-go and my opinion has only declined.

I hold out hope he's not as bad as what we saw last year. I do hope he finds some answers because I think he's here, at least, two more seasons.

He also seems to be a genuinely nice guy—but so was Munch.

Munch was the worst coaching hire of any NFL franchise in the last 10 years. Wisenhunt was bad last year but theres no way he could ever approach that level of incompetence. I think he's handled the Mariota really well this offeseason, I'm not ready to give up yet.

Man Shane Ray is looking pretty friggin good right now and we could really use the OLB depth... Woulda been nice to go Ray in the third and Daryl Williams in the 4th not gonna lie. Guess two "knuckleheads" (DGB) one after another could have been too much. Still, guy just had yet another sack and FF on top of a great preseason.

Are the players behind ZB any better? That's what I'm trying to say. Whisenhunt has to play the best players at the best positions. It just so happens that some of our "best players at that position" suck.

This thread was talking about coaching. I think our problem is with Ruston Webster at this point more than KW. Whisenhunt has a lot to prove however.

Yes, but if that is simply the best option for the team then Whisenhunt is actually doing his job. Webster is not.

Not saying none of the blame goes on the coaches here, but I think Webster is more of the issues than anything else right now.
