Mettshow hit him on a nice pass, but it was called back on another OL penalty

Yes and no. The advantage is teams have to account for our 'pro' style offense as well as the "spread' style offensive plays. While we will have the staple Inside Zone Read, the plays we riff off of that will change week to week depending on the opponent/defense/etc. For example, the Bucs have seen the single back zone read from Oregon to Eagles. But when we used a 2 back formation and had a lead Back in front of the zone read, the LB's completely bit on it which is why Wright was SOOO open on the first TD.

If we can game plan and build wrinkles in effectively, we won't be running into problems until later in the season if we game plan and adjust well like they did in this game. Unfortunately, I'm worried Whiz has been game planning this one for weeks and while he had an excellent plan, how will the plan be when he now has days for Cleveland. I think this was a major factor in beating KC week1 and then laying an egg in week 2.

Also, different style defenses will cause different style problems. Tamp plays predominantly a Tampa 2 so for the most part, we knew what to expect and how to attack it. A more man dominant defense will have problems from Mariota running it and the simple pick play we ran very effectively a few times (TD to Douglas, First down to Wright). Also, Mariota made such a great and quick decision on his TD to Walker when we were expecting a different D (Tampa gave us a new wrinkle) and Fowler was the first read. Mariota came off him so fast you would think Walker was his first read.

Yeah we are going to find out a lot about whizs ability to game plan week to week. This could be a case where we see whiz blossom as a game planner simply because he has a qb who can handle what he wants to do.

A couple things to keep in mind. The Browns OL looked over-matched (and was) but it was going against arguably the best DL in the NFL. Not to diss our team, but we don't have that yet so we can't assume we will do as well getting pressure on Johnny Football as the Jets did. Also, Johnny won't be coming in as an injury replacement, he'll have a week to practice and game plan for us.

And the fact that Pettine uses a multiple front/coverage defense that likes to pressure and play trap coverages, this will be a huge test for Mariota and our OL not to mention Wright vs Haden. It will also be a huge week for Whiz to game plan this as well as week 1!

    A couple things to note.

First, I suspect some of our runs given up were due to us playing our S's back more often than not (though I can't confirm til I watch it again). Also, holding calls made and not made were all over the place. lewan got a pretty ticky tacky call and then they hold Orakpo I think and get a sideline run with much more of a hold and no call. The problem area was up the middle. Williamson filled well but not a great game from ZBrown who at times didn't fill well and sometimes when he did (4th down run) he got driven back. You can't let a small rb drive you 2 yards backwards on 4th and 1!!!

Second, I don't see the Poutasi love. He and Bell combined had up and down games and the down part is not good. He got Mariota hit a few times and can be given credit for at least 1/2 a sack. He should thank Mariota for delivering a few nice balls under duress. Winston threw picks and incompletions under pressure while Mariota did well for the most part though that sack near the endzone could have been disastrous!!! Need to see how Meredith and other backup OL looked in the game. We need Mariota to be healthy and kept upright!

Sankey did well for the most part but West looked quicker. These guys will be a nice 1-2 punch with the occasional McC. Run blocking was noticeably better.

Mariota had the best first game rookie performance I've ever seen...period. To put it in perspective...Peyton Manning didn't throw 4 td's in a game his whole first season. Marino didn't do it 'til his phenomenal 2nd year. More comparably, RG3 did it in week 11 of his rookie season along with about 80 rushing yards but similar passing stats. Of course, he was running purely a college Spread Zone Read. The most comparable guy is probably Russell Wilson (whom I compared him to). Wilson plays in a semi-pro style offense with zone read elements and packages. Wilson threw 4 TD's in week 16 of his rookie year. Wilson finished that season with a 100 QB rating, 30 TD's vs 13 turnovers, and about 3500 total yards.

Whiz had a lot of time to game plan for this first game and TB's D isn't nearly as hard to read. Question is, how well can Whiz game plan for a much tougher D in Cleveland with a weeks time.

    Game Balls go to...

Mariota - A historically great performance. And he's already forgotten about it and on to week 2. Others would be holding press conferences to toot their own horn!!! Not Mariota, the guy has a career day and just deflects praise to his teammates. Classy and a great competitor! Mindset of a champion!!!

Whiz - Excellent game plan and management of Mariota, different packages, and the run game. Finally created a mismatch gameplan! TB was on their heels the whole day!!!

LeBeau - Can really see the difference in our effort, knowledge of assignments, playcalls, and pressures without giving up too much risk.

Wright - What I expected to see from him year 1. Perhaps we just needed a better QB?

Orakpo - Made a difference in the run and pass games. Kept Winston uncomfortable and tied up more than 1 blocker quite a bit.

Morgan - 2 sacks and really played well, with great heart!

Mariota's accuracy was a key factor - compare it to the QB's in both MNF games and you'd have to give the kid props.

Thought it was interesting when Whizenhunt said some of the playcalling was similar to what he use to do with... Cordell Stewart.

Seriously though... imagine if Stewart had talent??
