I'm sorry I can't dumb it down any further. If you plant your entire foot when catching the ball, which is what Wright did, all of it has to be in bounds. If you're tapping or dragging your toe it doesn't. If Wright had fallen out of bounds instead of a controlled step, it would have been a catch. Bizarre sure, but that's the rule. Always has been.
