I actually wonder if this deal was made...when Mularkey took over as Interim Coach. He probably said something like, if I do this, it ruins any snowballs chance in hell of me getting another HC chance, so I'll do it if you hire me as HC at season's end to actually get a real shot. When Horton found out his interview was a sham, goodbye!

Where there's smoke, there's fire!!! Especially after Underwood speaks...

What was most telling is that they had a HUGE head start on practically every team in the league, in terms of time to search for their next HC. Yet they were slow as molasses once the final season ended. Cleveland and the Dolphins showed great urgency. The Titans never did. They planned to hire Mularkey regardless of his record.

The level of fanbase apathy should be epic, this season. I've NEVER had this much of a sick feeling in my stomach about our team, and that is saying something, considering we thought we hit rock bottom under Whisenhunt. I just cannot see players being motivated and playing hard for this guy. The sloppy tackling you saw in the Jets game is what you are going to see all next year.

The ownership didn't give a damn, when they made this horrendous hiring decision, and the players are going to reciprocate accordingly.

LOL. My thoughts, precisely. Wonder whose wheel he had to grease and how many qualified candidates he had to step over to get that interview? :)

Making a bad decision is not a positive when you are gonna waste another year or two of our franchise qb's career!!!

IIRC, it was reported before the coaching interviews were completed, that some of the position coaches were informed by Mularkey that he would be the HC and that they would be retained.

Am I correct in that recollection? Does anyone else remember that, or did I, as Roger Clemens once said, "misremember that"?

I agree with you but I don't believe they could say that. If they did, it would be admitting that none of the other candidates they interviewed had a fair chance of being hired. It would be violating the Rooney Rule, in spirit if not in fact.

Were they all still under contract? Technically, I supposed none could go out and look for another job until fired.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mularkey would have told a few that they'd stay on if he got the job. I don't recall reading it anywhere though.
