I used to use a lot of pirated software. I was always screwing up my computer with one thing or the other. I got tired of paying someone to essentially wipe and reinstall windows so i learned how to fix it and saved a lot of money lol

damn, SDM with 1.5 year old laptop.. Cruds w/5 year comp..

built mine over a decade ago on XP, still use XP.. only had to replace some fans and the harddrives.. upgraded RAM and video card along the way but not out of necessity

i probably won't build one myself ever again but i will definitely go to a local shop, give them a budget, and tell them to make me one before i get stock computer

if Alzarius/tnfan's methods don't work it is probably an issue with the RAM if programs are slow and freeze.. assuming your anti viruses aren't lying

push Ctrl Alt Delete and check your task manager.. sort processes by memory uses. you may have some application that is using up more memory than it should. Shut down everything that's not needed.
Also, setting up which programs you want to automatically start at startup will help. It will lag you down if you have too much running That's often the problem. If that doesn't work, then I don't know what to tell you.

This is more of a "dummies" guide than any smart persons help. I don't know much, but it's worked for me.

For DJing, I try to have nothing running besides the vital processes and the media player.

Never bothered me or anything, the laptops I use for DJing I only use for playback, so I'd never heard of that issue. I don't do anything really interesting anyway, fading between songs is as intricate as it gets for me. I do mostly weddings, and it works fine for that.

Part of the problem with older machines is that the software manufacturers will update you right out of compatability. I work with print manufacturers that require the files laid out in the latest versions of the various Adobe Cloud programs. Premier and the audio suite items do essentially the same. This Windows 7 machine is at its last stop probably.
Same **** at home on the Mac Pro. ProTools and Apple are at war with updates, drivers etc and expensive peripherals become unusable.
You either sit with a non-updatable machine and all the other gadgets and interfaces that are practically obsolete keeping your fingers crossed that your software drivers hold up or get ready to pay $$.
    Techaddiction.

Microsoft Security Essentials and the Malware Removal Tool (I think that's what it's called anyway). I read that the Security Essentials was plenty good enough so that's what I've been using. Anything else you'd recommend?
