I think Tanney would be a decent 3rd QB to keep on the roster. He flat out beat Mettenberger in that Indy game. That convinced me there were no more excuse for keeping Mett. He's done.

Our 5th Rd is effectively a late 4th, so if Boykin is there, I hope Robinson jumps on him. Would be an awesome backup to have long term, as the guy is so close to being Russell Wilson 2.0 it's uncanny. All the same reasons Wilson slid to the 3rd Rd is the same reason Boykin will slide. I also think he will slide because there is a glut of good (not great) QB's ahead of him, in this class. With the 5th Rd pick, we are no longer searching for starters, but backups, and there is no more critical position to get quality depth than QB.

Just look at the 2013-2014 seasons, where Locker started the season. Fitzpatrick was erratic from one week and even one half to the other. He was and has always been a Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde kind of QB. We've not had a QB go a full season healthy, since I can remember. That should cause more urgency to acquire a QB who isn't a huge step down when or if Marcus is injured.

Tanney played barely any football, I would not put anything in his hands if I didn't have to

We can't commit to a guy with 1 half of football

My point was I would rather have Tanney than Boykin due to our weak roster. Once we strengthen the roster, I am OK with spending a draft pick on a developmental guy like that, just not now.

Problem with that thinking is, we had a fairly stout defense last year...at least while Morgan and McCourty were playing. Sure there are some spots were we need better depth or an upgrade, but the real problem was on the offensive side of the ball...namely a lack of a RT, and no franchise RB. Both of those problems can be handled with the first 2 picks, if not in FA. What was an even bigger problem for the team was when Mariota was out. We had NO chance to beat anybody.

That's why taking Boykin with a 4th or 5th Rd pick is a good answer to that problem.

Everybody in the late rounds is a project, so I wouldn't mind taking him late as a WR/returner type dude.

He's too good of a QB to move him to WR, IMHO. When MM8 is injured, this team is sucking wind at QB, so we need to address the backup with more urgency. First step is to move on from Mett.

Boykin may be the only guy that loves throwing directly into double-coverage more than Mettenberger.

Do you really think every QB picked in rounds 5-7 is picked to start someday? Really?

Late round QBs are picked EXACTLY for the purpose of being backups.

With that said, we have too many holes. Cut Mett and sign a veteran. Keep Tanney if we really want a third string QB.
