If this one makes it to 4 replies and doesn't end up in Taboo I'll be shocked.
But I recently dug into this ancestry.com stuff that I've had found some pretty cool backstory - and even found out I'm a distant cousin of my favorite actor Vincent Price..
Anyone else messing w this ancestry stuff?

I tried it and then hit the pay wall and then saw how much it was and was then like naaaaaaaa I'm good.

I made it back to England, Ireland and Norway, it wasn't hard.

My family came here in like the 20's, both sides.

I started w my father's father's side - who already had a documented tree and it matched up perfectly to everything I already knew going back to US Revolutionary era Hessian soldiers then back across to Hesse castle aristocrats of the 1600's.

I put off my grandmother's side until last - and to my surprise it was a goldmine of US and English nobility including US presidents and several Kings of England.

I have used it before but one of my relatives has done the work for me. She traced my mother's side of the family back to the 1400-1500. Now I need to go find it and go over it again :)

I have thought about taking the DNA test they offer to see what skeletons I may find

Is it pretty simple? As far as paying for it goes?

I always wanted to find this stuff out but many of those connections that would know are no longer here.

    Pro Tip:
Find a friend who pays for it. You can do unlimited trees for you and your friends for 1-2 months, cancel it, and everything is viewable for life on the Ancestry app. Even after you cancel it.

I took my Paternal great Grandma's side to 1000 AD in England.

If not for Ancestry.com, my son would have a different name. Gave him the name of my great grandpa who I never met, and never even heard about, as he died when my grandpa was young.

Is ancestry highly accurate? Not necessarily. There could have been 5 James Smiths born in London England in 1552, could have the wrong one listed in your tree.

Is it fun and very useful? Yes.

TBH it completely changed my worldview. I always thought I had strong German ties, turns out only one line of the tons that go into that tree is from German descent, all others that I could find trace back to England.

It helps to have an uncommon name.
In my father's tree I can find the spot where they left Europe and changed the name from something extremely German to something even more unusual..
