I was the same way. I could name you 2 of my great-grandparents (both of which I knew as a kid) and the rest, I was clueless. Hardly even knew my Grandpa's name on my mom's side.

More specifically to this question - it's not as easy as typing in your mom's name and then it spits out a result that says Brad Pitt is your grandfather. Generally you have to work backwards to move forwards. Find a single ancestor of note and you should be able to go from there. Most times it will be Civil War era or pre 1776 Goochland Virginia (it seems everyone who's family has been here a while has a relative from Goochland :whoop: ).

I started from Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpas. It went pretty quickly from there.

H5 for the link to the free trial.

Like some of you, I too already have a lot of that info, done by other family members, so it will be good to see if that info matches up. The family members have traced my father's paternal side back to the late 1700s and both of my mother's sides back to about 1800. None of those ancestors moved to America until the late 1800s. ETA: I'll have to see what info is available on my Dad's maternal side, which goes back beyond what I now have, which is late 1800s.

AFAIK, I can't claim royal blood in my veins like @CRUDS can, and I have no famous ancestors, just common working folks.

I'll have to sign up for that free trial when I have some time available to work on it.
