opening scene in Gladiator was epic, but that was a gazillion dollar movie

As a reader of military history it was as I would imagine it.

battle back then was eye to eye, messy, blood and guts. Nothing pretty about it. And when the chargers hit the scrum - brutal!

so Jon Snow is the son of Ned Stark's Sister and ? ( presumably a Targarian because otherwise why would Robert Bartherian need to kill the baby ) so therefore is only a first cousin to Sansa not half brother - interesting to say the least

played out that it dont exactly matter at this point in time cause Little Finger gonna be on the iron throne with Sansa or will it be Dragon Momma and bachelor X

either way Queen Serci will be hard pressed to pop out another heir so other than getting some revenge it looks like her time on the throne will be limited.

    possible Jamie/Dragon Momma union ?????

I have not read the books so all speculation

Varius the world speed record eunich...

bothered me seeing him in Dorn facilitating a meeting between House Tyrell & the Red Vipers and almost immediately on Dragon Mommas flotilla

But I thought on it and I am OK with it.

2 or 3 episodes ago Varius went on a mission & the midget stayed in Dorn to run things while dragon momma was impressing the dothraki's with her parlor trick. So now we know what the mission was and they waited till after the Cerci's wildfire takedown of the high sparrow to reveal that. When we get to Dragon Mommas fleet I assumed that they had just set sail from Mereen. But after thinking on it the crews appeared to be settled into their duties and I think they have been sailing for a while. At least enough time for Varius to interdict it. I am OK with it now, but it did bother me.

jon snow is the son of Lyanna stark (Ned's sister) and rhaegar targaryen (eldest son of mad King and eldest brother of daenaryes). The story was that rhaegar kidnapped and raped Lyanna. Robert Baratheon (the fat king from season 1) was in love with Lyanna and they were originally planned to be wed (this before Robert marries cersei). Robert kills rhaegar in a rage. However, Lyanna wasn't really kidnapped or raped. She was in love with rhaegar and fled with him before the wedding to Robert takes place. Lyanna as shown died shortly after giving birth. She asks Ned to do whatever it takes to keep Jon safe, because if Robert knows it's rhaegars child then Robert will kill it.

Rhaegar the much older brother to daenaryes, both children of the mad King... The one Jamie kills to become kingslayer. Which is also how Robert Baratheon took the thrown and ends up betrothed to cersei as the Baratheon and Lannister roles in the rebellion against at the mad King.

If you go back to cersei prophesy as a child (from that swamp witch) it's told she will become ruler until another more beautiful comes along (daenaryes is coming finally), that she would have 3 kids and Robert would have 6 and 10 (all bastards like gendry), and that all her children would die.., which now they have. The last line of the prophecy is that she would die with the hands of the valonqar around her throat. Valonqar translates to little brother. Aha! So you think Tyrion right? Wrong! It will be her little brother Jamie. She is transforming or already has into the mad queen. Jamie killed the mad King because he planned to do what cersei did do with the wildfire.

In the end, I feel Jamie is set up to live and end up with brienne.

I think there are more clues in the book that tywin lannisters wife had an affair with a targaryen and that Tyrion the dwarf is actually part targaryen as well. My guess at some point is that Tyrion and Jon snow end up riding the other 2 dragons

Yeah the way the scene aired it came across like he was teleporting between places, but you are correct there was enough time. In the book there will be 5 chapters dedicated to his crossing the narrow sea. So id take the show version over the book version.

this is now my biggest complaint about books to show as the show has essentially written off or killed off all the wolves. In the books a lot do die. But aryas wolf nymeria, same as the show she shoo's away before crossing the ocean, but she has dreams about nymeria and sort of controls her like bran can do with animals. Anyway nymeria essentially becomes a huge wolf pack leader and led a lot of attacks on lannisters and freys. My guess in the books, it's probably not just the vale that saves the day in the battle of the bastards, I bet the wolves play a large role as well.

I guess that cgi is too expensive and they had to cut most of the cool wolf stuff. They definitely play a better role in the books.

again I have not read the books....

so Dragon Momma has a 1000 ships full of Unsullied & Dothrki light cavalry....

    OK fine

But Reek & Sister Lovejoy left the Pyke with their arse hairs on fire and only sailed with a few of the Iron Isles best ships not 1000 or whatever.

where did the fleet come from????

my guess is that the large fleet is the salvaged remains of the Masters failed attack on Mereen and that the Lovejoys value was more in seamanship than actual numbers of ships

Yes, totally 100% agree. I'm sure there's marvelous films I've missed that display such a perfect pitched battle sequence but I can't recall any.

Yes, the battle was incredibly predictable based on the expected outcome... but nonetheless it was epic (for instance it was a real cavalry charge towards Kit Harrington on set). To 2nd whoever already mentioned it... Miguel Sapochnik should direct as many episodes as humanly possible next season!

Also, not sure if anyone is a Dan Carlin - Hardcore History podcast fan, but it gave me chills watching this episode and reminded me of Carlin's depiction of what the Battle of Cannae might have looked like on the ground back then (Roman soldiers burying their heads in sand to asphyxiate themselves, piles of corpses building up underfoot, that claustrophobic feeling as your army is encircled, and finally the slow, methodical slaughter of your army as the soldiers realize their death is imminent). Link to Carlin's Punic Nightmares episodes (highly recommend all his podcasts for any military history buffs).

if you look at the final scene there were martell, tyrell, greyjoy and targaeryn sigils on the sails. there were a lot of ships in the bay when the masters failed attack went down. combined with the three other houses she has more than enough to get the armies across.

she's gonna lose at least one dragon though. she's way overpowered and they'll have to sort that out.

i think the iron throne will end up being a moot point anyway... [IMG]

as far as the varys time traveling stuff... i just don't care. these timelines don't necessarily match up and they've never pretended that they have. Martin said it's impossible to have everything line up with all the moving pieces. i dont get why people get worked up about details like that. i'm guessing they spent quite a bit of time in mereen getting the ships ready before they headed for westeros.
