I agree with what your saying and dont like the behind the scenes stuff. But im also not very sympathic to the players either. I would have given anything to go.to UTK it just wasnt a realistic option for me. These kids get to go there for free, get paid (not much but do get a stipend) and have world class facilities and cafeterias supplied for them, doctors to take care of them and on and on.

The difficulty with the issue is (at least in the spotlight) that you cant treat the other athletes different because they play a different sport.

This isnt unique to college sports. I had a Commanding Officer whose wife was going to med school to be an obgyn. We moved two times to do internships at differant hospitals and on average worked 50 hours a week and was paid nothing. She is now in a phase (I forget the name of it) where she was selected to work in Mobile for four years. She was only allowed to submit preferences but had to be picked for the location. She will make 30k a year in this phase, 4 years I think. Meanwhile they have about 160k in student loans. He lost all his clients in his civilian job when he moved and they will move again when she completed this phase. Granted, she will make a ton after this but still six years of work and she has made nothing and now 4 years at 30k. Not fun

I actually like that idea, however going from high school to the NFL would be a mistake for 99.99 % of players. It's just too big a jump.
Baseball doesnt put them in the Bigs right off the bat. They still have to work their way through farm leagues.

I totally agree with that. It would be more of a symbolic rule, but there are guys who are physically ready to make the jump, even if they are few and far between.

Did Julio Jones, Adrian Peterson, or Leonard Fournette really need to spend three years in college football?

If I was a top high school RB and already had a man body at 18 like Fournette or Dalvin Cook I would absolutely go to the NFL out of high school. A high impact position with a high disposability rate and I'm losing three of my most productive, healthy years for free? Nope.

I've also been a big proponent of an NFL farm system, but it will never happen. Why bother setting up the infrastructure and fund it when college football is free?

if it was self generated, as you suggested earlier, I would be somewhat open to this. I would want to see a complemintary 100% walk on student athlete athletic department also supported by this 'business'. As a taxpayer it would be better than the pretending we do now that most of these guys are getting an education. Some are, heck including all scholarship athletes possibly most are, but football and roundball I am thinking vast majority are squandering this opportunity.

I get what you are saying, I just have a hard time believing a kid right out of high school is going to be ready or drafted by an nfl team. The leap is simply too big. Of the ones you named I think Fournette would be the closest but I think even he would have a rough time. Plus looking at the teams side of it, how many teams, besides the Browns would take a risk of a first/ second pick on a kid playing high.school ball. The competition and stage just isnt good enough to evaluate how they would transition to NFL.

Have to didagree that the vast majority of football players squander their opportunity. There are nearly 10k Division 1 players. There are 1696 roster spots in the NFL. The overwhelming majority of these kids are not playing in the NFL for 8-12 year, most are not playing a year.

None initially. It would take years and a lot of success stories for the NFL to be willing to do that, but we're talking getting paid late round/undrafted money versus not getting paid at all. The minimum rookie salary is $450,000 in 2016. I'd take that.

The ones who are good enough would be getting the mega deals at 22 instead of the rookie first round deals after spending three or four years in college.

Just about all linemen, QBs, LBs, and most DBs/WRs need time to get the body they need to perform in the NFL, but there are exceptions and those guys should have the option of making that decision for themselves.

The problem is we have no developmental system. We go from high school, to college, to pro in football. Then we take a look at the Olympics and in some sports if you're 26 you're too old. Those athletes have been perfecting their craft since they were 10.

There's really no reason we can't do something similar in football other than, "well, it's always been done this way." I guarantee there would be fewer wasted draft picks if guys got professional development from coaching, health, and financial specialists. Imagine not having to determine if this spread QB can make the transition to an NFL offense because we've seen him do it for the last five years.

AAU the **** out of football.

The problem I have with that is that late round picks are not guaranteed to make the team, most done. Then they dont get that 450k salary.
Also, I think we do have a developement system, college football.
I like the idea of a d league, but I dont think its profitable. Football is an expensive sport. I dont think people are going to pay to watch dudes that think they are too good for college but not enough for the NFL. I try to put myself in that spot. If im asked to spend 1000 a game talking my family to a vols game each year or spending 200 going to a titans d league game, im going to the vols everytime and it's not even close.
