One of whom was Antonio Gates, who held out of camp once and was suspended for three games for it....

Gates was an undrafted free agent, so he didn't have the leverage that Bosa has right out of college. Of course, the moment he had that leverage he used it to the best of his ability to get the best deal he could.

Get the most while you can.

Gates held out after his 964 yd 13 TD year I think. Bosa has done jack**** yet.

Don't want to play by the same rules as the rest of the teams picking at the top then don't pick at the top.

A holdout is a holdout. Gates held out after two years in the league. If Bosa signed his deal and then held out in two years because he was significantly outperforming it everyone would be saying the same thing right now.

Get what you can while you have the leverage.

Bosa should get what he can now based on where he was selected. A) his career and health aren't guaranteed. B) SD already doesn't have to pay him as much as a few years ago because of the rookie pay scale. I get why SD doesn't want to pay him upfront for Albert Haynesworth type reasons, but he was picked that high, I think they gave up that option to really negotiate being cheaper.

As far as a first RD for Bosa, I don't think that's out of the realm of reality IF he would be playing in a 4-3 system. I too don't think he will work very well in the 3-4. Bosa is gonna be good, but needs a good situation to max out potential.

We're also only going off what the Chargers FO has released. The devil is in the details for these contracts, so who knows what they have in the contract that he's rejecting. They could be saying they're going to wait to pay him most of his guaranteed money at the start of training camp next year.

I mean per their words, they're going to pay him a lot "within the calendar year". Well what does that mean? What's everyone else's contract look like? If other guys are getting $5m up front and a roster bonus in the spring for the rest of their money, and they're going to give him $6m up front but no money till training camp of next year, that's not right. They'd be holding millions of dollars longer than anyone else.

It's probably all about cash flow and earned value of money.

They also probably still want the Offset Language in there which is the dumbest of all things to force on a player. If you cut the guy and still owe him $1m, and another team signs him for $500k, you'd still be on the hook for the $1m. With offset you're only responsible for $500k. So good for you!! You spent 3 months haggling over the POSSIBILITY of not having to pay a few %. Not to mention you've got bigger problems for having your no. 3 overall draft pick get cut before his rookie contract is up.

The money is guaranteed either way though right? So even if Bosa pulls an AH, it won't matter. He will still get his money. It's just a matter of when, not if

Regardless of who you side with, money only goes down from here for Bosa.

Even if he re-enters draft, he isn't going before the third round at the absolute earliest.
