This is one of those questions... Let your kids play, just understand and get them to understand it's not if but when they will get injured. It's part of life and you can't protect your kids from life.

It's ironic you guys have this thread up. My oldest son (8) is pondering playing tackle this year (he currently plays flag) but we are undecided. I'd probably let him play, if I felt HE truly wanted it, but the truth is, I think he will actually like flag more. Faster and plays both sides. Besides, he is really solid at soccer and swimming too...I have to admit, I used to play balls out backyard tackle football, then also organized for a bit, but the head stuff does bother me. My nephew is a DE in high school and got concussed out for the year on a freak play, and he was sick, etc the works. Nobody wants their kids noodle all jacked up, especially when there are many other options....

My oldest is 13, and he has been playing since he was 9. He played middle school football for the last 2 years. Next year, he will be playing high schoolfootball. My wife does not want him to play. Deep down, I don't either. Every year, we are happy after the final game that he is in one piece. I may have to make an executive decision in the near future about him playing football. They take football in TX very serious. He plays WR and CB. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a nervous wreck whenever he does a drag route, slant, or crossing route.

Think this brings up an additional sub-argument. Would parents consider it differently depending on the position they play? For example, I think the D overall gets less head injuries and I think anyone on the line, OL or DL is less likely for head injuries but more for knees/ankles etc.

Tell that to a CB that has a pulling guard and rb running right at you, but I see your point.

Definitely did not say the d doesn't get head injuries. I just think less than offensive players.
Even more, I think CB and S are right up the with WR

right now they are saying OL is one of the worst positions for CTE. It is belivied that multiple minor colisions are worse than the occasional big ones.

Concussions can come from all different hits, doesn't matter what spot you play. No one is safe

But there are certain jobs I just prefer my son not try out for. RBs take a lot more of a beating than anyone else for example, but it's really all about seeing the hits and being ready for them. As soon as your neck whips back you're in trouble.

Also just wearing the equipment as its intended will lessen the chances you get concussed. The guy I saw first hand carted off the field always wore his helmet loose.

But back to the question if certain players are less likely, maybe they are, but human anatomy is what it is, gotta be ready for the hits and be strapped up...

When I dabbled in coaching, it was hard to get kids to wear helmets that fit, especially kids with crazy hair.

I'll tell you what really has concussions. Girls basketball. Not sure if it is a neck strength thing or a balance thing, but it seems like with any contact, girls are going to be slamming their head on the ground.
