It totally does matter. Where would we be right now if the team wasn't bad enough to grasp the #1 or 2 pick on the Mariota/Winston year? Even someone as stupid as Webster couldn't screw that one up.

Where would the Colts be if they hadn't been bad enough to draft #1 overall in 1998? They'd probably be in a different city, instead of sitting in a state of the art arena. That franchise's city and arena has Manning to thank for that, entirely.
If the Colts had 2-3 more wins in 1997, they would have gotten Ryan Leaf or another player that would have changed the direction of the entire franchise.

As it was, no other team ever had a shot at a QB of his caliber, not matter how well they drafted. Tom Brady was absolute luck. Lightning in a bottle, and a perfect situation. Couldn't repeat that.

And Chris Johnson was pure luck. Did the speed gamble, and it paid off for a few seasons. Did the same with Chris Henry and major fail.

Good teams can make great choices in the late 1st/2nd/3rd rounds, but your most talented guys are pretty much always taken early. Not that there haven't been tons of horrible choices at every position.

My name isn't Mayock or Kiper, but I pretty much agree with you completely...I'm here in the west coast and Adoree Jackson is a little raw and needs polishing for corner, but at the very least, he gives us a home run threat in the return game at any moment, which we really haven't seen since D Mas, or Pacman, the kind of player that every time he touches it in the open field, you feel like he can go...In any case, If we can't find a trade partner, I trust Jrob to do what he has to do but I am hopeful we move down....

If we're talking about a drop that far - you're basically discussing the same distance as LA/TN trade last year - so it would need to come with significant increase in picks, and not just two 2nd rounders.....

If we double traded back to 20, i would only be happy with a future 1st and 2 2nds or 2 2nds, 2 3rds and a 5th. That big of a move would have to load us up with picks. I would be much happier with a move between 8-10 that netted us a 2nd and a 4th. Then we would still have a choice of garrett, allen, foster, lattimore, adams, hooker, thomas, williams or davis. Because most likely 2 or 3 qbs will go top 10 and 1 or 2 rbs.

I really want Foster on this team, it's like having a wrecking ball in the middle of your defense. He might drop a few spots because of his surgery, but he won't be there at #18.

To the OP, I love the idea of trading back and getting a second. But not all the way back to ~#20 for 2 seconds, that's too far IMO. I know it's all about finding a trade partner, but I don't want to go further back then #12. I think you can still get a true impact player at that point, but then it'll fall off a bit. 9-10 would be ideal.

His surgery doesn't scare me. His concussions do.

Yeah concussions definitely worrisome...That said...Seems like a lot of guys are coming with injury question marks in the first round this year.

For sure. Combine medicals are going to be very big. I also think they have become more stringent on digging into medicals than in the past and every year they put the players under a microscope more so than the year before so I think medicals are more common knowledge than in the past and fans now even hear about a lot of the issues.
