Exactly this. As long as a QB has been decent and looks to be a "franchise" type guy, his contract one ups the last big QB contract signed. That's just the way it goes in the NFL.

Although, I could see Mariota settling for a lower number... Above 20m but below 25m. Either way, barring some catastrophic injury Mariota will be in TN for years to come and he will make a boat load of money.

 

Mariota isn't taking slightly less because he's not going to negotiate the deal. Negotiations were contentious regarding his rookie deal because of offset language. Dude gettin' paid.

 

This would be the dream, but I can't see it.

He's gonna have his agent, family, friends and yes, fellow football players telling him to get that money.

He will be coming off a rookie and about to enter his prime, that is his shot for a huge payday. Unlike a Vet who has already gotten crazy money and his priority is strictly only winning.

Even the most humble athletes get paid big when it comes down to it.

Now if what you mean by "team friendly deal" is instead of getting 25+ million and only taking 24.5 million, then I guess that is possible.

 

I'd say the best we can ask is that he structure it in as cap friendly a manner as possible.

 

Well we've also been saving cap space for him.

He'll absolutely get more because his deal won't be happening for another two years. By then, the cap will be a good bit more than it already is.

That'll come later. We're making him rich with the next contract. After he's set for life, then he can take a team friendly deal on the next extension to help bring more rings to Nashville.
