Sometimes players just have to play. It can't always be textbook.

You can look at every play and say "if so and so would have did this and so and so would have did this, then this would or wouldn't have happened", and that goes for every play and every player.

In the end, it all boils down to what actually happened. Mariota has been pretty good at making things happen when maybe people watching didn't think it should have happened that way.

I actually disagree on your take of the throw. He threw to where Murray as running but Murray was going to stop in that hole before the LB. Mariota throwing at a guy not looking isn't that lucky either but to your overall point, luck has been on his side before as well. I'd refer more to the AJ TD catch.

That's how he plays?? Dude.. that was lucky as duck. A half competent nickle picks it off or at least gets in the way of the ball. If you're going to hang your hat on our QB always pulling out that magic, you'll be thoroughly disappointed.

It worked out for us. We've had a few lucky breaks, and some unlucky ones too, but we've been more lucky than not. Can't expect that to continue.

Expect Mariota to throw off balance? Oh yes I can.

IF, IF, IF, IF...so what? Weird, the good players always make the plays happen and the bad players always fail, seems strange huh?

If the DE was a second faster, would have sacked the QB and would be no TD...
If the CB turned his head sooner, it would have been a INT and no TD...
If the kicker did pull so hard the kick would have been on...
If I sell $2M more at my job I can buy a new boat, truck and fly to TN when Seattle is in town. Point is, who cares...

We can also refer to Mariflota's 9 INTs/fumbles returned for TDs. So it's not like only the good luck is on his side, that in particular was a scary throw to make in the endzone, I cringed watching it.

Problem is, there was a defender where Murray was running. Maybe you're right about the eye contact. Guess we'll never know since we're not in his head. It was dangerous throw nonetheless. The CB was still pretty much squared with the LOS when Mariota decided to throw it. I don't think he saw the defender stop trailing Matthews. Plus without setting his feet the ball placement was off.

After watching the play, after he eluded the sack, he had plenty of time to reset, and either deliver a more accurate strike in the zone to Muarry, or have seen Matthews getting wide open on the left. At the end of the day this was still a fantastic outcome for us.

As good as he is, he is still young and raw. I'm sure this is something he's working on. Scary to think about how good he can be if he continues to develop.

Oh of course you can. Go for it. But if you expect a positive outcome every time, prepare to be upset.

And if the queen had balls she'd be king. That's not the point.

And no. What a dumb comment. Good players have bad plays and bad players sometimes succeed. This isn't even about the success or failure of a player. We're talking about one play. In this one play... a good player made a great football move, then threw a bad pass, that lead to a fantastic outcome. It happens. We got lucky.

What's the point and who cares? I don't know, it could have something to do with this being a message board. I'd say everyone who's reading this thread probably cares at least enough to read it. If you don't care, stop reading.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I'm not hating on the guy. It's not like I brought this up out of the blue. Someone else posted this play and called it perfect. I'm simply pointing out, that is not the case. Some of you guys act like Mariota is infallible. I'd be willing to bet that when this play came up in the film room, they agreed we caught a break and realized it was an opportunity to learn and get better. This kid is going to be scary good as he minimizes some of these mistakes.

Some of you want to put blinders on and think that he poops gold, go for it. That's your right. I do love reading all the flip flopping love/hate that goes on in here from season to season because of all the biased views and unrealistic expectations. Sure makes the off-season more entertaining.

He's had many moments where I hold my breath and say wtf? Been off on lots of wide open throws. But I'll be honest, I'm a homer, believe in him and damn it has been very bad prior to his arrival. He's brought us tons of hope...
