Does Mularkey's history suggest major shift in offense?

He became a more featured player. His numbers across the board stayed inline with what he did in San Fran, but increased overall with more opportunities. Opportunities that were afforded to him by being penciled in as a day-one starter the moment he signed his contract.

Walker was always a talented player. Mike Mularkey did not squeeze out untapped potential deep from within Delanie Walker's soul. If that was the case, Mularkey's tight ends would have increased their production through his coaching everywhere he's been the TE coach.

Somehow, Mark Bruener never topped 20 catches a season with Mularkey coaching him over four years in Pittsburgh.

In 2007, the Dolphins needed two tight ends to combine for Randy McMichael's 2006 production after he left for St Louis.(Mularkey got demoted from OC to TE coach between 2006 and 2007 because he's a moron).

Delanie Walker is literally the only starting TE to see his production increase while being coached by Mularkey. I guess Mularkey finally figured out how to coach TEs, or the the Titans signed a guy who was capable of being more than a #2 TE and just needed to be featured more to prove it.

And as an aside, Mularkey's ability to coach TEs does not in any way indicate his ability to make sound game day decisions, which his lack of that ability is what makes him an idiot.

I can work with a logical argument.

TE position is clearly a different animal than it was in 2007, the last season that he was a TE coach, and completely different than the period in the 90s of which you speak. Bruener was a blocking TE, and was no consistent pass catching threat at any point of his career. And the 2007 Dolphins team which you are referencing was one of the worst NFL teams of the 2000s. I'm not convinced that you can commend any demotions or personnel decisions that they made prior to that year, because they certainly did not work out. He received an OC subsequent to that, so he apparently did something right.

Walker is really talented. I can't ignore that, just like you can't ignore that he went from being a backup in SF to an average TE in year 1 with TN, and became a threat when Mularkey came on board. It could be a coincidence, but coaches get credit all the time when their talented disciples play up to their talent.

As far as his head coaching ability goes, I'm not completely convinced, either. I believe that he understands Xs and Os, and can inspire his players, but many game day decisions have seemed rash and ill-planned. Hopefully that is due to inexperience, but it's not like we wouldn't have commended him if the odd gadget plays and conversion attempts had worked out. I'm glad that he's getting the opportunity to coach, since he's never really had this capable a roster, but I'd prefer to have someone more established. His tenure feels a bit like a ticking time bomb, but pulling a team out of the depths of hell to win 9 games is worthy of another chance.

Wasn't Walker a backup in SF only because Vernon Davis was crushing it as a #1 then? I recall Walker (although no high stats) being a threat in SF next to VD.

Yes he was drafted in 06 with Davis being the 6th overall pick.

If you've got a matchup guy like Delanie who you believe can get to 1,000 yards, you don't just throw it to him 20 times each season. Davis has never had 1,000 yards receiving, while Walker has, so I don't think he was killing it to a point that they'd completely disregard the DW that we know.

If you project how many times Mularkey has made the playoffs as a head coach and his record against division rivals, it projects to him being a scrub and the worst HC in NFL history.

I love me some good Mularkey hate, but let's be real, he's never had him a shiny franchise QB before now

Chances are we're stuck with this joker by way of Mariota carrying him.

Man coming to terms with this reality sucks. Like we all know Mariota will make any coach look good, but what could have been if he was paired with one of the best coaches in the game.

Guess it could be worse, we could still have Whisenhunt playing players out of position and getting guys killed.

If nothing else, Mularkey at least knows enough to put Mariota in position to do his thing...

Yea but He had Webster as a GM drafting Gaurds in the 3rd round to play RT. I think Whisenhunt with the combination of JROb would have been better for Mariota
