I rarely say this, but that analysis is just plain wrong from start to finish.

    1) Murray 1-1 in space with a LB is a better option than Walker covered by 3 (safety over the top, LB trailing and LB underneath). At least he has a chance to make a move.
    2) Decker is 1-1 with a DB on the deep route. No "sea of red jerseys" there, but then again Mariota never looked.
    3) The right DE crashes inside Conklin to get pressure. Mariota could have escaped to the outside and bought time, potentially forced Mathieu to come up leaving Supernaw open.
    4) But he didn't need to. He had plenty of room to step left and up in the pocket, to give Walker or Supernaw more time to get open.
    5) So you're admitting that Robiskie made the right call to go PA when the defense was aggressively playing the run? And you do realize that to run a PA you can't just put 5 receivers on the field and have them immediately run routes, right?

Bottom line, the play was sound. There were better options than Walker, but Mariota was locked in delivered a bad throw.

What are the chances Mariota was told to only throw it to Walker?

Yeah. Maybe look at not throwing 2-4 picks a game.

Zero. Because then Supernaw would have stayed in to block as he served no purpose otherwise.
Decker was the deep option, but also intended to create room for Walker (which he actually did). If Mariota had bought just a splitsecond more time, Walker most likely would have been open underneath Deckers route as it looked like the LB couldn't keep up. But he threw it either too early or simply too inaccurate.

It's only at pee-wee level that you tell you QB to always throw to the stud WR.

    *EDIT*
Let me just clarify a bit here. Obviously Mariota was told to FIRST look for Walker to get open. That was the primary design of the play. Decker clears out the safety with a go route and Walker runs the post underneath it. However that doesn't mean he should ONLY look at Walker. I think Mariota is smart enough to know the difference. The problem is entirely on the field, with his decision making and most of all accuracy.

If we lose to them and the Jags win this week, which they will, that will be a meaningless game.

    Edit

    For the division at least.

I wasn't defending Mariota's decision, I was criticizing the play design. Nobody is open, and that isn't the player's faults. It isn't the worst thing I've ever seen, but there are clearly better route designs to be run for a young QB who is struggling. That's pretty clear after watching any other team in the NFL.

If the defense shows they are aggressively defending the run, yet still have the personnel in place not only to defend every one of the receivers, but also get the interception, it is not a well-designed play. At least not for Mariota. Going to Decker would have been the best option, but I have no confidence he would have made a good throw on a deep sideline route, and I'm sure he didn't either.

I think he could have got it to supernaw there. That 3 yard gain with 20 more 3 yard gains within the last minute would have won us the game.

Obviously sarcasm. With time as a factor, he needs to try throwing down field a little. Glad Mularkey could hook him up with 2 extra blockers on a 4 man rush.

I also saw someone say he could have run. Based on some of these pass plays with 2-3 targets covered by 6-8 guys, he almost is getting forced into running every play to keep from forcing a bad throw. Only s**tty QBs like VY look to run every play aside from those same haters wanting him to NOT run because of injury fears.

Our receivers rarely drop passes, and seem to make some incredible catches. You seem to forget we had a sure TD but the throw sailed way over his head.

I get the feeling this team will end at 8-8 or 9-7. Not enough improvement IMO, and they were gifted a weak schedule with the way the season played out. Just sad.
