Was listening to EStPN radio and some NFL insider was talking about skills competition and they mentioned that Scouts that hadn't had a chance to see Jamal Charles for the first time are now enamored with him. It is likely he will move all the way up to the 2nd or 3rd back taken in this draft.

Besides the fact that he is one of the two fastest guys in this draft, they mentioned he is the fastest when it comes to football speed, meaning the fastest with the gear on. Said as a pure runningback he is probably the 4th or 5th best out there, but as a receiver he might be the 4th or 5th best out there as well and this makes him very very valuable. He is a guy like Reggie Bush that you design plays to get him the ball in space.

His only real downside is he had fumble problems last year, but they said he has freakish large hands and with a little strength in his arms he should fix that.

Hate to say it but if this is true I'm pissed, I was really hoping Charles would be available in the 2nd when we picked, I've been saying what we really need on this offense is more speed and now it looks like he might be one of the top 20 picks

I don't care how many draft picks we have wasted on runningbacks the fact is what we really need is playmakers and this is a guy that can be just that from a number of positions. I now think that if he is available in the 1st we take him and use him as a receiver or a runningback we need to.

Not another Combine wonder! We took one last year. :nono: Just kidding. Anway, here's a decent highlight but it's a year old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgOdDkjUo1s
He's got good speed, vision breaks some tackles and has good hands but sometimes he appears to shy from contact.

I don't think Charles shy's from contact at all based on the film I've seen of him and one good thing I liked was for a smaller speed back he likes to run north and south. IMO he is a 1st round talent but maybe he makes it into the 2nd round because of the strong RB class. I seriously doubt he makes it to our 2nd round pick however. A guy like him would give us a nice play maker but then again I thought that was why we drafted Henry.

Prior to the second half of this season, I had serious doubts about his abilities, but he was probably the best RB in college football the second half of the season after he stopped trying to break everything outside. I still have question marks, but he has a very high upside.

Fastest back in the draft eh? How many of them were worth a darn?

Maybe charles is a reggie bush type guy which means he might be able to average as much per carry as lendale.

Actually he is probably more like Jerious Norwood, who has averaged over 6 yards per carry as a backup in Atlanta and also been a contributor on kick returns and as a receiver.

Someone like Chris Johnson from ECU is probably a better comparison to Bush. He does not want to run inside at all and looks a hell of a lot like the next Leeland McElroy or JJ Arington to me.

Charles is a good, instinctive runner who does not shy from running between the tackles. He'd be a hell of an addition to this offense IMHO.

Think of it this way, I watched Priest Holmes from the time he was in high school down in San Antonio through his years at Texas and into his pro career. I think Charles has the same ability.

He is a hell of a blocker, he runs well between tackles, he has the ability to go over the middle and make the catch. Very good escapeablilty and in the open field there are probably only a hand full of NFL players that can catch him. The best part about charles is he still comes to the NFL with very few miles in him.

His freshmen year he played second fiddle to Vince Young, his sophmore year he split time with Selvin Young (BTW he is better than Selvin), and only last year was he the man in the backfield.

If he is available in the 1st and we don't take him; I strongly feel we will be kicking our selves very hard in 2 years.

Charles has very real fumble problems. Aside from that, he is great.

If by "shy away from contact" you mean "tries not to get tackled," I agree with you. If you mean he dives to avoid getting hit, I don't. JC isn't going to run you over but very well might run around you - you dont want him lowering his head too much.

The key to charles isn't the fumble problems but if he can fix them. According to the guy on the radio, he has huge hands but weak arms so once he strengthens his arms they believe his fumble problems will go away.

BTW I believe Lindale White only fumbled 2 times in his entire college career now he has fumble problems so you really never know.
