SUMMARY: The Titans and Albert Haynesworth did not reach an agreement on a long-term contract before the 3 p.m. central deadline. The All-Pro defensive tackle will play under contract during the 2008 regular season with a one-year, $7.25 million deal. Following the deadline, the Titans released an announcement which included "We will remain in contact with his representatives throughout the season; and at years end, see if both sides can agree on a fair number on a long-term agreement for a player with his qualities."

The Titans and franchise defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth did not reach a deal by today's deadline, meaning long-term possibilities are over for the two sides until the regular season ends.
Now the question becomes when and under what circumstances will Haynesworth sign his franchise tender of $7.25 million?

The team's statement from General Manager Mike Reinfeldt:
"This offseason, we are pleased that we have been able to complete long-term deals with a number of players, including Michael Roos, David Stewart, Justin Gage and Ahmard Hall; and we will continue to pursue these types of deals with young and emerging talent.
Unfortunately after months of ongoing discussions with Albert Haynesworth's representative, we were unable to agree on the right number for compensation; and by league rule, he will play under a one-year contract this year.
Albert is a player whose abilities we value and respect, which is evidenced by the one-year contract that makes him the highest paid defensive tackle in the NFL in 2008. We have great expectations for his play this year and what his play can mean for our defense and our team.
We will remain in contact with his representatives throughout the season; and at year's end, see if both sides can agree on a fair number on a long-term agreement for a player with his qualities."

    No real surprise here...

Now if we can just lock finny up long term this will have been a very nice offseason.

..probably won't see Al at the Titans facility until after training camp...and preseason. When he does get there...I hope the franchise tag will motivate him to bust his arse for another season.

I certainly hope you're wrong about Albert missing camp and pre season - He needs it.

On another note, I don't think the Titans ever intended to give Al a long term contract this year... At his best, he may be the best defensive tackle in football. But he's been inconsistant and injury prone thru the years...Another good year like last year will get him his big $$$$ contract.

  8. Frankly, the current financial situation should make it much less likely for teams to shell out huge contracts.

i hope the statement has some truth in it....that the team really does want to resign him at the end of the yr....i really cant imagine loosing him

...the albe signing n getting a sure num1 WR r the only two offseason goals the team didnt accomplish...to think if both those happened how much better our team could in the coming years

Now there is pretty much 2 scenarios on how this will play out: ONE, Albert gets motivated, and absolutely lights it up next year....then he signs a huge contract with someone else. TWO, Albert pouts, comes into camp out of shape, takes four regular season games to get into shape and then gets hurt and is inconsistent the remainder of the year, then we can have him on the cheap and inconsistent like usual.
