To be honest this cop could haven done a lot more than he did. Due to the time it took to stop and the wife fleeing the car he could have easily obtained warrants for resisting stop and in some states if you don't sign the traffic ticket you can go to jail. Now this is not to say that a magistrate would issue the warrant but The Entire Moats family could have been detained for MUCH longer. I guess a self-absorbed officer would have done that.

So hypothetically speaking, if say, his wife was about to give birth and he ran a couple of lights to get to emergency, the cop have acted the same way?

A cop could act that way, should he..no but legally he could use his discretion to act as the law requires

    1. News flash this dying woman had actually died already 3X before they got there. According to moats himself she had "coded 3X" when they were called and came back to the hospital!

I'm not trying to be unfeeling but we are not talking about a hollywood moment here where sweet words are exchanged and the person nods off. She was probably not even conscious.

    2. I timed from the video that it took 1 minute and 25 seconds from the time the cop asked for ryan moats' drivers license and insurance and the time he actually handed this information over. In that 1 minute 25 seconds time moats argues with the cop telling him to get the insurance card and at one time telling him he didn't have insurance.

I believe this is why he made the decision to write the ticket which doubled the time moats was detained.

    3. I watched both videos several times and i honestly can't see anything the cop did wrong as far as his job is concerned. Could he have been more understanding, compassionate? Sure. A little less barney fife by the book? Sure but moats and his people did several things wrong. Didn't stop, dashing out of the car creating a potentially dangerous situation and a driver who refused to cooperate and argued with the cop adding to the time.

    4. The entire ordeal lasted all of 13 minutes. Not very much time.

    5. I wonder if anyone is going to get fired or written up for hippa violations. A nurse blabbing somebody's personal medical information to strangers is not exactly kosher is it?

How about pulling the car over and saying clearly and respectfully officer my wife is going to give birth any minute can we please get to the emergency room first?

Can't use the cell phone? Call 911, hey my wife is about to give birth and we are heading east on so and so highway with caution lights on?

His mother-in-law was dying! I doubt Moats or anyone in the car had trained for this event. If you have ever been in a situation where a family member is in a life threatening situation, you would know that you can't quite think as rationally as you normally would. The cop, on the other hand, had been trained for situations like this. I don't care what Moats was acting like, as soon as the officer knew the situation with the mother-in-law he should have shut the over-aggressive switch off and escorted Moats and family into the hospital. It is the cop's job to be cool, under control, and professional, not the panicking family members.

A saw someone post that they wouldn't pull over if they were in that situation,i would highly advise you not to do that. You have to put yourselves in the shoes of an officer, chances are, you've already givin him a reason to pull you over whether it be speeding or running a light. The longer you take to pull over, the higher the chance of the situation getting escalated when you do in fact pull over. In most cases(except for Moats)if you explain yourself the officer is going to let you go. Keep in mind police officers have heard every type of excuse in the book so if they seem hesitate at first its only because there trying to make sure your not lieing. Some officers will even escort you to the hospital if they can which is nice.

Rationale usually doesn't come into play when an emergency (or perceived emergency like what happened here) is happening. Bottom line is the cop was being a ****, and if Moats was a more notable player in the NFL he would have let him go.

Being a more notable player has nothing to do with it. Whether its Tom Brady or your backup long snapper if you dont follow the rules of the road, the police officer has every right to due his job despite the situation. Uncooperated behavior is not going to get you far in a traffic stop, that i can guarantee.
