And you are fully capable of naming them.

How long after acquiring Brees and Shockey did the Saints win it? Sharper and probably Shockey are not super "over paid" signing btw.

Sharper and Shockey are the equivalent of Thornton, Mawae, Hope types.

Brees was also a major risk.

    That's Fisher.

Whose to say we didn't talk to him? We possibly could have made an offer and it was rejected. We may never know.

Cream of the crop doesn't mean they are good. Very few superstars hit free agency. You'll never see a Manning, Brees (at his current performance, he was considered a mere decent player when he was a Free Agent), Chris Johnson will never be a free agent at his current performance etc etc. unless they REALLY want out.

    Harper hasn't signed.
Tulloch McGrath and Thornton - how is that bad? And Bulluck may still yet be resigned, but that doesn't make him automatically better then McGrath considering he cannot run yet.

    From Rotoworld:
If Bodden is available for that type of contract I'll be disappointed if we don't at least try to go and sign him like the Texans are doing. I don't think that would be overpaying for him at all. Especially compared to Dunta Robinson's deal and you could argue that Bodden is the better CB.

Can't believe he was asking for Dunta money (despite probably outplaying him).

Has to be the uncapped year going to his agents head... But hell you can't blame him... His name has been mentioned out there with the top FA's this off-season, so he's gonna get some bank from someone. Hopefully it won't be us, I'd rather build in the draft... Hell Fred Smoot might even get a fat check.

Well that is where we differ. In business, market value is what people are willing to pay- period, end of discussion. If you were to sell your house and somebody offered you 120K and you said, I'll think about it believing for sure your house really only worth 110K and then another buyer comes up and says- I'll buy it for 150K. Then your house's market value is 150k- because people and their offers ARE the market.

Now NFL player market values are complicated- I think we agree there are numerous variables such as team need, risk, past performance etc. But nonetheless, the market value is determined for that player by what teams are willing to pay for them.

As I've said in another post, my definition of overpaying is when you could get the same performance for less money from somebody else. The problem is- how can you be for sure. My criticism with how the Titans have approached FA is there are clearly superior options based on past performance only they would cost the Titans more. The Titans would rather NOT pay than pay that FA for the lower risk that player represents.

I think for the most part this whole discussion boils down to a few folks like myself who would like the Titans to ante up and acquire the services of a qualified vet. I'd like to see us at least bring guys like Cromartie, Robinson or Bodden in for a closer look. Instead the Titans bring in bargain jobs like pago tatofuo (?sp) and this Babin guy who can't stick with a club.

Yeah this guy would be worth $4-5 Million a year. And for 4 or 5 years, that would be a reasonable deal. I'm not saying that Bodden is very very good or great, because I haven't really watched him play. I do know that we need some serious help at CB.

That prayer dudn't get answered here in Fisherland. But I do agree with you, we're the coupon-cutting, bargain basement, clearance shoppers of the AFC South.

as long as the Titans keep selling out season tickets, why should they make big moves to improve the team? after all the NFL is about business. and money is good for the Titans.

Fisher is more worried about being the longest lasting coach, and Bud still likes money more than Rings. We will have to get very lucky and have a couple of no names become stars for us and make a run at the SB before we lose them to $.

    Well...

Brees and Shockey weren't signed this past off-season...only Sharper was. Shockey was pretty banged up all season and the Saints took a gigantic risk in betting the farm on Brees. Fortunately it worked out. How did that QB in KC work out? There are many more examples of free agent signings that are bad than ones that are great. If you know the Titans history, you need not look further. Doesn't mean you CAN'T improve a team with a free agent...you just can't rely on it...which is why the Titans typically are not gonna give anyone they aren't sure about a 25-40mil SB or guaranteed money.

Agreed, but that's a drafting problem. I've been seriously beeotching about the whole TE thing since Shad Meier.

I'm sure they talked to his agent and saw he was getting offers in the range he was getting and the Titans said no thank you. He's not worth that contract NOW let alone in a few years when you're hitting the backloaded part. At his age, he's not worth that cap hit when the CBA comes back.

Yeah, but by that time, he might not be a top 10 or even top 15 LB who'll not justify his contract with his play and you can't cut him because of all the guaranteed money.

The point is...who much is a player worth now and in the future in terms of his impact on your offense or defense and that impact on wins and losses vs his salary and cap hit.
