No, Warrick Dunn was a legit RB who could catch. Dunn was run first, catch second. Jacoby Ford is WR who can run. I'd say the better comparison would be a Percy Harvin and if we're lucky Steve Smith? Jacoby is the type of receiver who would get 10ish runs a year, mostly WR reverses, etc.

    Well...

The positives and weakness of Jacoby Ford...

Positives - SPEED SPEED SPEED. A guy who runs in the 4.2 range can literally run away from everyone else on the field as we saw with CJ. Ford was utilized very well to maximize his speed...Go routes, deep post routes, short crossing routes, WR end around, WR screens. Clemson's offense was Spiller and Ford and they caused huge problems for teams so he can be a major pain for defenses to contend with, especially if he's opposite a star RB (Spiller or CJ).

Negatives - Being a former track guy, he does not play to his 4.2 speed and doesn't have the fluidity and jukes of a CJ. He didn't run the whole route tree at Clemson so he's a project as a fulltime WR. He's relatively weak and not a good blocker. His hands and routes are average. The biggest difference between him and devastation is that he doesn't play to his timed speed. For example, he doesn't explode out of his breaks so he can be covered. While Ford has beaten Sydquan Thompson, Thompson has also been able to cover him one on one down the field. Thompson ran a 4.70 while Ford ran a 4.28. Wilson almost completely negated Ford at Senior Bowl practices. Why? Wilson could read the route and jump it despite Ford having a big speed advantage because of Wilson being so good but also because Ford doesn't know how to set players up....even on a stop and go pattern which should show his speed advantage.

Because he's smaller, weak, doesn't explode out of his breaks nor run the whole route tree (nor run his routes too cleanly), he won't be a 1st rnd pick. Someone will probably take a shot at him in rnd 2-3 but it really depends on what type of WR teams want and how much risk they are willing to take. Every WR in this draft has question marks (Bryant included) so it's really the kind of guy you want. Ford could excel immediately with a team that will use him as he was used at Clemson where he can run away from people using the patterns he already knows, not have to block much, and not rely on running sharp/crisp routes to get open.

The Titans won't draft him because we already have a WR corp covered. Britt, Gage, Washington, Hawkins. Washington and Hawkins are similar kind of players. Where would Ford fit in to make him worth even a 3rd rnd pick? The Titans have a LOT of talent at TE and putting 4 WR's on the field puts all of our TE talent on the bench. If they want another mismatch I suspect they will add Cook to the field. We need to drastically improve our D and I don't think 1 pick is gonna definitely do it. We also need OL depth and a 3rd rnd pick would help out a lot. And BTW, in 5 years this draft could be considered the best S class in a LONG time. The 3rd rnd would also be a great spot to get Hope's replacement!

And I don't know how anyone can compare Ford to Steve Smith. Smith is a VERY well built/strong WR who also has great body control/flexibility whom you can't press due to his strength and agility (Ford is not close), he explodes out of his breaks (Ford doesn't), has great hands (Ford doesn't), ect...

    Smith is a bad comparison...

They are both short and fast...but that's about it.

    Jackson's also a bad comparison.

    ^ Good post!

^^ I could see him being a Percy Harvin type player. Which is why the Titans probably won't even consider drafting him. I'd use a 4th - 5th round pick on him though.

Are you kidding? Dunn rushed for almost 11,000 yards in his career.

I'll say this again, I'm normally a guy that loves speed, but if we draft a WR it better be one that knows how to both run routes and catch everything that is thrown to him. I think we have the real deal with Britt, now we need that guy that can move the chains. I doubt Shipley will be available when we pick, so it's going to have to be someone else.

Well if we want a legit WR with some speed, we should go with: Blair White, Jordan Shipley, or Carlton Mitchell. All should be available in the 3rd round.

So glad to see I'm not the only person thinking about this. Hope is on his way out with each passing day. His replacement needs to be brought in sooner than later.

But, they're all black receivers, so they must be comparable. I think Ford could be our Randy Moss.

^ Oh yea that's wishful thinking. At least we aren't talking about another white guy being the "next Wes Welker". I hate hearing about the "next Wes Welker".
