I like this list but I want to add a #5 to the 'don't like' list that played a big part in VY's stint here: The Failure to Adapt to Change.

True story: Four years ago after VY had his great rookie season we drafted his teammate from Texas, Michael Griffin. A friend of mine built Griff's house and invited me to come meet him. After spending some time with him, Griff and I got into his car to make a trip to Comcast to trade a cablebox. During that time, we talked about how VY was doing and he said something to me then that I never forgot, especially in the context of the upcoming season. Griffin had played against VY in practice for years and let me know that his college defense had pretty much figured him out. Remember during the rookie year when VY had those amazing touchdown runs? Griff told me that he and the other defenders had noticed that he did the exact same move every time he was going to move out of the pocket and run...and he always ran the same direction. What I thought to myself was...."Hmmm, I wonder how long it will take next season for NFL defenses to figure that out?"

The answer was "Immediately". The beginning of the sophomore season saw defenders picking up on VY's habits from film studies and taking advantage of it. No more scampers up the field in open space. VY was either flushed to the sideline, hurried for a poor throw or taken down. In many ways, that's expected. The problem was that VY was slow to adapt to change. VY's decision making didn't get demonstrably better as he gained more experience. His footwork barely improved at all. Frank Wycheck was loudly complaining about that on 1045TheZone at the end of Season THREE. And the throwing style was not doing him any favors, especially if it wasn't helping his accuracy.

Things did get better, albeit slowly. Having CJ in your backfield will make anyone look good. And Seasons 4 and 5 certainly had bright spots. But he still didn't get the work ethic thing like he should have. Remember when Rusty Smith got his chance and the first comment from Fisher's mouth was how early he showed up to practice? You have to be the guy that is first to work and last to leave when you are the starting QB in the NFL, especially with something to prove (and are single with no kids).

Lastly, I think in some other markets, VY would not have gotten five years to prove himself. The experiment would have been cut short sooner, especially when the practice/off the field stuff started to be noticed by everyone. But it's over now and Jake Locker has his chance. Hopefully, he'll make the most of it.

 

When is vince Young coming to be raiders backup?
