Exactly who could come in and be as good as C.J.?

Monitoring is different than knowing what you have to work with. I don't think anyone knew anything for sure up to those few last days.

He's a distraction NOW. Think that gets better with him standing on the sidelines watching the team workout? As for his attitude, I'm assuming he's frustrated (as he should be) and that he's not happy with the Titans front office right now. Why does anyone need that at BSP? Get the deal done. Have a happy press conference. Take some "grin and grip" shots between Reinfeldt and CJ and move forward.

You have to be careful how as to how much you "reward" players currently under contract. You'll have guys like Finnegan thinking they are exceeding their contract with guys like Asomugha making $60 mil over five years. In three years, whatever CJ ends up getting will be eclipsed. Will it be okay for him to hold out in 2014 with two years left on whatever new contract he ends up with?

I don't fault the Titans not addressing this contract until all UFA/rookies were signed. That happened 10 days ago so now it's time to get serious about it.

That is true. For the most part, however, other teams PAY their franchise players and keep them around. Who was the last Titan to get a payday after outperforming his contract?

Why even bother with him? He's clearly under the misguided impression that 1/3 the starting RB in the NFL are just as good as CJ. Let him be. When CJ doesn't sign and our offense looks like a high school team this year, we can all just make fun of Deuce. Until then, I'm tired of arguing with trolls over how good CJ really is. He has more rushing yards AND all purpose yards then anyone in the NFL since he's been in it. If that's not enough, eff it.

I just want to remind everyone that a little over two years ago a lot of people were bashing the FO for not stepping up and paying fat Albert to keep him.

Past performance cannot gaurantee future production so they need to be careful about the size of this contract. Obviously one of the best decisions our FO has made is the deal they didn't make with Albert.

    I'd say that's a fair assessment.

Monitoring the progress is how you would shape the deal. They had an idea what % of the cap they were willing to allocate to CJ. The absolute number isn't as "vital" as its been made out to be to have been.

He could have and should have been in camp with the ink dry. Anyway- sounds like we agree he shouldn't be in camp until the deal is done.

    Agreed.

I agree. That is why referencing his performance THUS FAR as justification for his new contract is so important. First, it demonstrates the organization values players who excel to a record setting level. Second, it serves as a benchmark for other players to know what type of performance is required to get a new contract. In your example, if Finnegan wanted a new contract for more money (rather than just an extension at current amount), then simply state "we'll talk when you set a record the way CJ did" etc. It is a win-win that way.

It didn't have to be a public pissing contest.

I do. They knew this was coming for over 12 months now. They could have resolved what % of the cap they were willing to allocate to CJ and for how long. They could have had the numbers filled in by day one of training camp to present to him.

True, however, CJ hasn't been a behavior problem the way Haynesworth was. I'm not sure that it is a fair comparison. And nobody is advocating overpaying CJ.

On the other hand, who was the last Titan besides CJ to outperform their contract?

KVB? He got a lucrative 2nd deal. McNair? No. Eddie? No......

There haven't been a lot of "franchise" players who weren't already paid well. It's funny, if we're so cheap, why are we always bumping the cap?

    How they treat players? Agree

How they pay players? Normally disagree, but the current situation looks bad. The total payroll is very competitive. While the Titans don't go after a lot of stars, they do keep good competition at most positions. This current situation though...

    *Johnson holds out*

Reinfeldt: Come to camp and we'll talk.

    *Finnegan leaves*

Reinfeldt: Come to camp and we'll talk.

    *Finnegan comes back*

    Reinfeldt: Sucker.

    Johnson: LOL. pwned.

Reinfeldt: Come to camp Chris, you'll be the highest paid running back in history.

    Johnson: Pffft.
