Amano needs to go back to being a guard where he was actually good. If Vlachos(or mathews, but for the sake of the point...) is good enough to allow him to go back, the interior of the line should be managable this year barring injury.

    Well...

I agree with your post except for a couple of things. Chris Johnson is arguably the most talented offensive player we have AND we are paying him as such. If we're gonna make the run game secondary to the pass game, we should have traded him. If you have a superstar rb and not a superstar QB, you build your offense to make your superstar sucessful first.

And I agreed with the first part of your post that the FO chose not to build up the interior OL. The draft DID fall as expected but they didnt go that way. Those players were available and they chose not to take them.

I agree with Ensconatus that this staff is showing their hand in focusing on the passing game. That much is evident in drafting WR in the first as well as not addressing the woeful run-blocking by their OL. They seem to be assimilating within the rest of the league's offensive philosophy. Hopefully they are right in thinking Locker is the QB to take make it work.

I also agree with you here that CJ is essentially wasted when you do this. His strength is in the open field and when Amano is consistently blown into the backfield it makes CJ ineffective (we can blame CJ, too). CJ is getting paid too much to not be the focus of the offense. Luckily there are no impending salary cap problems so his number won't be a huge burden, and when it is he will probably be worn down enough to be cut. Interesting situation in the next year or two if the offense indeed heads in that direction.

More on the subject: Does anyone remember the reasoning for the staff moving Amano to C and Harris to G when Mawae left rather than just playing Harris at C? Seems they usually try and stay away from moving around too many parts like that and instead make the simpler decision.

    Um...

So you're telling me you'd rather have a guy who will play part time this year (Wright) over a stud OG who will be starting for us for the next decade? That doesn't make sense to me. And the difference between Decastro starting over Harris vs the difference of Wright starting over Williams as the 3rd WR....makes this a tough argument for you. Williams is at worst a solid WR. Harris is not a solid OG. Plus, I think Decastro has more upside AND allows CJ to get back to being a devastating runner (which we are paying him a lot of money to be).

Smart teams plan for the future but dont ignore giant holes in their starters to take luxury picks.

And as far as Brown is concerned, LB's who dont like contact and show it in college are tough to change in the pros. No guarantee he can become a starting OLB for us. I think we'll see him in Nickel or Dime situations but if he doesn't develop into a starter by next year, this pick will be a bust. Many times ESPN or NFL analysts will talk about a player not liking contact. It's unheard for his own coaching staff to say that!!!

Don't get me wrong, I like Wright as a player. But it's hard to hit him down the field when the QB is on his back and you have to throw into nickel and dime defenses all day because we can't consistently run the ball because we have problems in the interior OL.

    Well...

A lot of quick LB's get away with not taking on blockers in college because they are so more athletic than the OL they can just run around blockers. Can't do that much in the NFL. You move out of position to run around the OT and you just lost contain on a RB that's FASTER than you! You need to be able to take on blockers because you have little choice when people run AT you. There are two things you can't teach LB's...speed and instincts. brown has the speed, but seems to lack the instincts. As one college coach once told me, I'd rather have a 4.75 guy moving in the right direction than a 4.5 guy moving in the wrong direction.

Brown is not exactly a textbook tackler either. He kind of grabs you and pulls you down. He needs a lot of work on the fundamentals of playing his position. The benefit is he should be a special teams demon and should help us in obvious passing downs to cover some of these top TE's.

This pick concerns me the most as he is the prototypical boom/bust player!

That's 50% more blocking than Amano did. Sad really.

Center was our most glaring weakness all year and I'm surprised they have not addressed it yet. However, as bad as Amano was, the whole offensive line last year was really great at pass protection. With the pick of Wright and Thompson, it seems like the Titans are wanting to open things up more and be a pass first team. So as bad as not having a new center seems, at least the pass blocking was ok.

Why does everyone act like we are suddenly going to be a pass first team because we drafted a WR in the first round? We need starting WRs on our team. Britt, although he the potential to be one of the league's best, has been hurt most of the past two years and has had hamstring problems since he first got here. When he goes down, Washington is forced into the number 1 spot which isn't where he should be. We are just covering ourselves by taking a play making WR because we can't rely on having Britt on the field for the whole season. It doesn't mean that we are going to suddenly stop using CJ considering he is our best play...it just means we felt the need to beef up our WR corps to cover for our injury prone #1.

Yes, we do need a new starting Center but we also need players to move the chains. Considering our head coach is a HOF offensive lineman, I'm sure he has plans to address our need at C. Considering most teams aren't drafting starting centers in the first round, we took another top need at a position we also need help at. Playmakers on offense really help your defense look better too by keeping them off the field all the time.
