360's been fixed?

No offense Puck, but that is a bit of an ignorant comment, and probably the biggest reason why the 360 issues hasn't been properly addressed yet, after almost two years in the market. People just don't seem to care enough. Even before the 3 year warranty, many people didn't mind to keep buying new 360s after the originals kept failing.

As a consumer, I couldn't possibly spend my own money on a product that isn't reliable... even if it had a lifetime warranty. It's just common sense. I want to be able use the product I bought whenever I want without any issues. So, why should I be contented with a product that I have to send in for repair 2-3 times a year? Because they will fix it for free? I don't think so. Now, I'm perfectly aware that you might end up with a defective product from the most reliable of brands from time to time, but the 360 failures went completely out of hand - the fact that Microsoft decided to take a huge loss by extending the warranty, just proves that.

Bobo, my advice is to wait for the 65nm units, which are supposed to be released sometime this fall. Overheating seems to be the main reason for the red rings, and the 65nm CPU will run cooler as Puck mentioned in an earlier post. It remains to be seen if that will completely fix the overheating problem, but it's a start at least.

I'm actually waiting to get my hands on a 360 as well, but I won't buy it until they get their stuff together... hopefully before Mass Effect comes out.

I think you may have took my point a little to much at face value

I am in no way condoning faulty craftmanship

my meaning is that past issues with the console would not deter me from playing games like OBLIVION / BIOSHOCK / GEARS OF WAR
if for some reason the console should overheat and fail, at least I'd be comforted by the fact that the console is covered for 3 years and by te end of the warranty period, they'll have the issue resolved

games like Oblivion and Mass Effect will have you on it for 5-6 hours at a time, without even realizing it

I'm pretty sure the overheat issues are fixed, btw
but it still wouldn't hurt to get one of the new chipset units
the guy at GameStop said that what they had were the new 65nm sets, but it's hard to take that as gospel

not sure how you'd find out outside of calling xbox or emailing them
or do like everyone else does and just google the info

 

Puck, I understand what you're saying. It makes perfect sense for people who bought the console without being aware of its problems. But for newcomers like Bobo, I simply wouldn't recommend a 360 until the issues are fixed.

It is very unlikely that Microsoft will make an announcement about this. Their best bet is to sneak in the new units into the market very quietly. Otherwise, nobody will want to touch the old ones still on shelves. But I'm pretty sure someone will find a way to differentiate them sooner or later.

 

well, with Halo 3 droppin' next week and Mass Effect next month, I can recommend the system, with one caveat - it must be one of the new HDMI equipped units - 65nm or not
ideally the new 65nm unit would be ideal
but like I've mentioned, I have had no issues with my replacementbox

yes, it's is "kind of a risk", but a 3 year warranty helps

 

and ultimately, I could still recommend a 360 over a Ps3

^ yes, the 360 is a freakin' FPS machine
however, Mass Effect and Oblivion also make it a nice RPG unit too
Saints Row and Blue Dragon "could" be suggested, I like Saints - a GTA clone
I also like the 360 as a racer machine
not much of a platformer though
