5-2 defense still can't stop the run?

Yes it is a 5-2. We start 3 300 lb guys inside and 2 4-3 DE at OLB. That's 5 D-linemen averaging 294 a guy and we are still as soft as ice cream against the run. Must be a scheme problem.

You guys know that the 3-4 was originally called a 5-2 right? It was popularized by Oklahoma in the 50s and called the 5-2. NFL teams began to adapt the concept in the 70s.

So what happens when you have a guy like Wimbley who is no more physical at the point of attack then a 230 lb guy, can't cover anybody and can't rush the passer? They went out of their way to keep that guy.

The defensive scheme seems to make us weaker in all areas. We are not strong against the run. Our linebackers are not as good in coverage and we have less speed on the field. WTF is that?

What we are really missing on this defense is a weak side backer who can really run and cover ground. Something you have with the 4-3. That's why i thought they should have tried Zach brown at right OLB. He's not small at 6'1 248, similar in size to James Harrison and with his speed he could have developed into a decent edge rusher.

My God he would have to be better than what we have had there this year. I hate having a slow defense and it doesn't help to have a strong safety who is a liability in coverage.

Brown would have been worth a try on the edge but now we will never know.

We don't even have a smaller faster package we put in for certain situations. Why not kick Morgan inside and move Gooden to the weakside on occasion?

Our 2 ILBs are not a good fit for the 5-2 or 3-4...whatever you want to call it. They are both undersized. We also don't have a real NT to occupy 2 blockers in the middle. Thus the guards can easily get to our smaller ILBers who are unable to shed them. You can't really ask a guy like Gooden/Woodyard to really take on and shed big OL. They are better using their speed running around them.

News flash: This front-seven has sucked for a long time. Now that most(all?) of them are playing out of position they're worse.

Everyone wanted a 3-4. Well, you got it.

ILB is just glaringly bad, IMO.

Never understood the Woodyard signing. Need a thumper and we bring in a guy who's been nothing but light in the ass against the run his entire career and is probably better suited as 4-3 WLB.

Geniuses at work, I tell you.

Fu ck 3-4 defense. This team can't and won't be able to establish an 3-4 defense with this personnel.

Horton came in and has this defense in shambles with his 3-4 defense.

Maybe things would be way different if we had the CBs, but for now, this 3-4 defense is blowing up in our faces.

It's clear we don't have the personnel to run Horton's defense. Therefore, he has to go or this defense will have many new faces next year.

Well you said it. Everyone wanted a 3-4 because we had "so much talent" at LB. Well, how is that working out? And there was the opinion that we had to go 3-4 because all the best defenses were running a 3-4. I look now though at it appears most of the best defenses are 4-3: Seattle, Denver, New England and Cincinnati.

Even in the 4-3, our LB's were an issue.

I dont care what scheme we use, we just need better players to run whatever scheme it is.

This is a tear-down year. Next year will be rebuilding. The coaches and FO are just looking for guys they can keep around. There will be major changes in the offseason.
