    I read that too from wikipedia, but thought deities meant gods.

    They were Gods. Supposedly the creators of the heavens and earth. Gaia is the main figure with Cronos being a second. They gave birth to Zues and the rest of the Olympians who eventually toppled them. Cronos ate all of his children prior because he was told that he would eventually be overthrown by his offspring. It's been a while but if I remember correctly Gaia hid in a cave to give birth to Zues.
