Benchmarking Mariota 1st preseason game

The Mariota hype train is full steam ahead. We all hear about how great he looks in practice. Accurate, poised, in command ... I think I heard someone say he hasn't thrown an int or something?

Anyway, before Mariota goes on to start his 1st preseason game (and is subsequently declared either a bust or HOF player) I just wanted to remind everyone how our QBs have typically looked in preseason week 1.

I am not trying to draw any conclusions for Mariota whether he out performs or under performs compared to Locker or VY ... I just want a realistic measuring stick to which we can compare Mariota.


2014:

Locker: 1/2 for 5 yards passing, 2 atts for 2 yards rushing, 1 fumble

2013:

Locker: 7/11 for 58 yards passing, 1 att for 4 yards rushing

2012:

Locker: 7/13 for 80 yards passing

2011 (rookie year):

Locker: 7/10 for 89 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 fumble

2010:

VY: 5/6 for 78 yards passing, 1 int, 2 att for 3 yards rushing, 1 fumble


2009:

VY: 9/14 for 131 yards passing, 1 TD, 2 att for 9 yards rushing, 1 fumble

2008:

VY: 3/6 for 17 yards passing, 1 att for 35 yards rushing

2007:

VY: DNP


2006 (Rookie year):

VY: 4/11 for 56 yards passing, 4 att for 28 yards rushing

Additional Observations:

1) Man we wasted a lot of years on VY and Locker

2) LOL, in 2010 we faced both Hasselbeck and CBJ in the 1st preseason game (CBJ dominated).

 

I just want to see him look comfortable in the pocket, convert some 3rd downs, and move the team down the field.

Can't expect much more than that for a rookie week 1 PS game.

 

of course there will be other bench marks as well. Another I (and probably many others will be using) will be to compare him to the other rookies in the league (namely Winston)
