With all due respect, that's a heckuva lot of people.

Most folks in the business world need to use Windows specific software. There aren't Mac alternatives for most mid range and above industry specific software.

If you want to work from home, then those decisions start to affect your home machine as well. Of course you can run XP on your Mac, but doesn't that defeat the point?

  2. It is a lot of people. I won't argue that. But it isn't 90% of the computer users. It isn't even 50%...

People who say they need Windows often don't. They just don't realize that they could use a Mac as well to do what they do.

Probably the most sensible thing a Mac user has ever said on this board.

Not true. An Xbox 360 retails at what, $350 roughly? A really good high end graphics card (equaling that of a 360) can be had for $200-300, as long as you don't buy the very latest edition, because obviously they're ridiculously priced.

Disclaimer: Because the dollar is incredibly weak, it's a little difficult for me to make an accurate comparison to the "normal" price level over here.

Windows ME was the only thing that crashed on me frequently, but it was the most garbage OS ever. And I'm sure Vista will for awhile, because that's how Gates rips everyone off.

I'm intersested to know how XP runs on BootCamp or Parallels
claims are "native speed" .... ok, we'll see

the Mrs. won a computer of her choice in the $1400 range
we chose 2 options : a Vaio and a MacBook
she's a little apprehensive on the MacBook front, but it does come with Paralles and XP pre-installed, so that should calm things down a bit

In all honesty, if they got the whole 'virtual machine' thing right, why wouldn't a consumer want the best of both worlds ?

  8. With Boot Camp, it literally is native speed. Boot camp isn't virtualization, it simply boots the computer up in XP (or Vista or whatever OS) instead of OS X.

I don't think Parallels is quite as fast, and I don't have any way of testing it myself. But if you have enough memory (at least 2 GB), you can use it to run XP and XP apps at an excellent speed. Gaming isn't going to work as well as natively, but it should run just fine.

the Mrs. won't be doing any hardcore gaming
quickbooks and general small business stuff is all she really needs XP for
I'm going to try and break her into iLife and see how she does
fwiw, she's using Explorer for all her net browsing and photo viewing
    :yuck:
she'll love Safari and iPhoto (she tried Firefox, but it doesn't work well on her XP Dell - imagine that) she loves iTunes - that's a start

she ordered this http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/d...crosoft Windows XP Home pre-installed-MacBook
I'm confused at how they arrived at their price point
the Parallels package and XP are only $184 on top of the $1299, that doesn't equal $1519 - maybe they charge for installation ?

anyway, I don't think she really even needed Parallels
I figure that BootCamp would work just as well
the caveat is that Bootcamp is either one or the other right ?
I think with Parallels you can fast-switch back and forth between them

since she's basically getting this as a reward compensation, we'll have a few bones to get some RAM
I'm tempted to blast (two) 2gig chips in there
