Matthews Named to Pro Football Hall of Fame

SUMMARY: Oilers-Titans G,C,T Bruce Matthews was voted today to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The six-man class including G Gene Hickerson, WR Michael Irvin, TE Charlie Sanders, RB Thurman Thomas, and CB Roger Wehrli was elected by the Hall of Fame's 40-member Selection Committee who met today in Miami, Florida. The newest members of the Hall were selected from a list of 17 finalists that had been determined earlier by the committee. When Matthews retired as a member of the Tennessee Titans following the 2001 season, no full-time positional player in NFL history had competed in more games (296) than the former USC All-America. In fact, he played so long that his former Trojan teammate, Jeff Fisher, became his NFL coach. A three-time Offensive Lineman of the Year, Matthews started 292 of his 296 games played in the regular season and started all 15 playoff games in which he played.
