The same refs from the Titans vs Dolphins game is doing the Redskins vs 49ers game this week. They had a repeat of the incomplete pass returned for a TD. Yep, 2 weeks in a row they allowed an incomplete pass to be picked up and returned, called it a TD. Luckily, they got the call right under review this week ... but how many times can this happen?

Then, there's this 3rd down play, which saw a Skins player be tackled over a yard short of the 1st down marker. He is clearly tackled, he rolls 4 or 5 yards laterally toward the sideline, at least 3 parts of his body touch the ground (knee, elbow, and butt), then as he stands up and tries to continue running he falls flat and his entire body touches the ground, then he stands up AGAIN and runs 15 yards down field ... these refs call it a 1st down and give him the full run into 49ers territory. 49ers had to waist a challenge just to get the call right.

I'm not sure what the NFL's insurance plans are like, but surely they have eye coverage for the refs? Can't they get these guys contacts or laser surgery or something? Or either just find someone who can do the job?

    Every time.

They're taught to let the play run through to the end because they can, in theory, overturn a fumble. They cannot go back and give the defense a fumble return for a touchdown if they blow the whistle dead.

What the league needs to stop doing is telling these guys to rely on replay to get the call right and tell them to make the right call to begin with.

They made another bad call for personal foul on sherff late in the first half. The run was directly behind sherff, he was engaged with the LB then as thompson(?) went down, about a have second later sherff finished his pancake. They called it a PF.

    This crew is bad.

but to the argument of them making the F'n call, say they call it incomplete then review. If the opponent had a clear recovery, they still get the ball where it was picked up.

Refs just letting replay do the work, they're too scared or don't care to make the call on their own. This is leading to very bad ref calls.

On razor close calls, I agree. Not on 10 yard incomplete passes or when a guy has been tackled twice. I've not seen any other crews in the league having this problem.

They're going to get someone hurt when they let it happen where it's obviously not needed. When a guy is tackled twice, his entire body is on the ground, and you let him stand up and run another 15-20 yards and take an silly hit from a safety downfield ... they're just asking for something ugly to happen. That's where you get revenge hits and tempers flaring and injuries.

What's going to happen is coaches are going to tell their guys "Look, it's that crew. We know how they ref, so we have to be safe. If someone on the other teams picks the ball up after the play, take them out. Because if you don't, it's going to be called a TD."

If they're going to ref the game with replay, then they need to adopt the college system of everything is automatically reviewed. It's not fair to tell the coaches that "our goal is to get a maximum of 6 calls (the maximum number of coach challenges) a game correct on the field".

thing is.... the TD might be your only chance at getting it right cause if the tackle is made short of TD then no automatic review...

    just pointing this out.

make the correct call real time. Thats the job

AND even when I played football in HS we were taught to treat every play like that as if the ball were live.

That bad call is really on the Titans' Coaching. If the players were coached to play that ball as if it were live; one of our players could/would've gotten on that ball. Hell we might of had a chance to take it to the house. It's a lack of fundamental COACHING. No matter how bad the call was; & agree it was a bad call. If the team had been coached well; it would not have mattered. We would've ended up with the ball; instead of sitting there watching the guy return it.

I disagree. I think they should go the other way and limited the replays even more so the refs actually have to make the calls. In the early 2000's the only replays were from coach challenges.

They review entirely too much now. One byproduct is slowing down the game (don't care so much on that). The other is that refs don't make close calls and rely on replay to make it for them. Then you also rely on the "not 100% evidence to overturn" rule. The refs should be good enough to make every single call accurate, but for the couple they get wrong, coach challenge should be enough.
