De La Hoya - Mayweather

I had the score 116-115 Mayweather. This was EXACTLY how I called it. Mayweather was brilliant against a bigger, more aggressive fighter. It was close on the cards, but Mayweather was superb. Congrats Floyd, you earned it man...

Once again Mayweather makes it look too easy. Toyed with De la Hoya the entire fight mocking him by letting him win the few rounds he did. He scared me at times, but he always does by letting the opponent throw their hands hopelessly about.
I honestly felt really bad for Oscar. It was like watching a sparring session.

 

Mayweather is boring to the casual fan. I've always admitted that. But to boxers and people that appreciate the sweet science, he's amazing to watch. Jaw dropping. But yeah, if you like brawling, Mayweather isn't the guy to watch. He's smart.
I disagree with the undercard though. Horrid undercard matches, and GBP should really have put someone in the ring worth watching for at least one of the 2 fights. We were all sitting around just hoping they'd end because they were bore-fests.

 

As a Golden Gloves boxer myself, I relish watching Mayweather watch. He's not exciting to watch, but he is an artist nonetheless. I put him in the same category as Winky Wright or Pernell Whiticker; masters of the art, but not fun to watch to the casual fan...

 

Winky isn't very skilled though. Mayweather shows his skill throughout the fight. No matter who you put in front of him, he'll make them look like a sparring partner. Slow, frustrated, and outmatched.
The reason he isn't a 'threat' is only due to his fragile hands. He breaks them just about every fight. He had Oscar's legs loose last night when they were on the ropes at one point, and his counters made Oscar stop jabbing because he was getting hurt.

Sugar Ray Leonard is my favorite fighter of all time, but if Sugar Ray was as smart as Floyd is, he may have gone undefeated as well. Floyd doesn't want to end up a vegetable like Muhammed Ali. The moment you start fighting for the crowd, or just giving them something exciting is the moment you become vulnerable and WILL begin losing.
He's a perfect boxer. I like fighters too, but fighters aren't as impressive - just more entertaining. Big difference.

I wish people would watch the fight over again though before acting like Floyd somehow ran the whole night. He stood right in front of him far too often, he just didn't get hit. He even backed in to the ropes to get Oscar swinging wildly. He exchanged a lot, but a lot of times you have to watch him closely because you'll miss a lot of what he's doing.
He's brilliant. He'll retire undefeated no matter who else he fights, and will still be healthy, mentally and physically. He's in it for the career, not to make UFC fans happy.
And Mosely isn't a fair fight. It'll have the same result as Gatti and DLH. Too slow now, and the main issue is reflexes. If you can't see Floyd, you can't beat him.

 

I agreed totally with what you said, except the part about Winky not being skilled (and SRL part; Hagler is my favorite fighter :ha. He's clearly a pound for pound top 5, albeit not the same fighter as Floyd. Other than that, great insight cous.

 

Winky is an extremely skilled Defensive fighter. He is almost impossible to get a clean shot on and throws straight hard punches out of his defensive stance. I expect his fight with Hopkins to be another yawner though. Both fighters are great, but I expect it to be a slow fight like most of his are. Styles make fights. Of course I will watch the fight even though I do not expect it to be action packed.

Floyd is in Roy Jones territory now. He is so fast and accurate that he just dominates his opponent picking and choosing his spots. Only difference is that Roy could take you out with one shot that would come for any angle in a split second. That made him more exciting for me.

Floyd's style and skill keeps him from having to show his heart (which is what we all want to see tested on any fighter) and I have never seen him hurt.

I thought the scoring of the fight was horrible and should not have been that close. Yes, De La Hoya pressed the action in moments, but Floyd controlled the fight with ease.

I should have listened to my heart and not let the hype get to me on this one. My money was on Floyd but I thought that maybe Oscar could catch Floyd with a shot that could change the fight and slow him down just enough to make the fight competitive. I was stupid for even thinking there was a possibility.

When you are as good as Floyd is and Jones Jr was, you don't have to take any chances during the fight.

If Floyd keeps fighting, which I would be shocked if he stuck to the retirement, someone will catch him sooner or later. How he reacts to that is what I wanna see.

Roy could not take a punch very well when his time came and I blame that on the fact that he never got hit for most of his career.

For the fan of boxing, skill is only part of it. Sometimes boxers have so much skill that their heart does not get tested.

Too bad every fight can't be like Gatti/Ward, Holyfield/Bowe, Mugabi/Hagler, Hearns/Leonard just to name a few.

So, who is the guy out there to test Floyd?
