    it might just be me, but the caption of 'hehehehe' is deeply disturbing. the idea that a full grown man laughing like a little girl is unsettling.

    I think you're confusing "heheheh" with "heeheeheehee". ;)

    The first is a grown-up, sinister laugh, while the latter is more like a little girl!

    So... from the same site, so I don't know how they are so vastly different:

    1. hehe
    muffled laughter, suggesting a sneaky aspect to that being laughed at, differs from lol in this way, which is a full on belly laugh.
    2. hehe
    it is a variation of laughter

    usually a sneaky or creepy laugh
    5. hehe
    An alternative form of "lol" or "LMAO" to display a lesser sense of humour.
    So... I'm not completely wrong and JCB's usage of it is right on. I conveyed it as Thompson using a muffled laugh and being sneaky about it.
    So... RIGHT BACK AT YOU, BUDDY! ;)
