Are there any adevrtisements shown on US television about the perils of drink-driving (not that people should need to be told in this day and age)?

In my 6 weeks here, I don't believe I have seen one.

Here are a couple of ads from Australia that are aimed at speeding or drunk drivers.

    Pretty effective in my view.

Carpy, where did you move to? Mississippi or Missouri?
    Waitaminute...St. louis, wasn't it?

Anyway, see on the map I-10 that runs through Miss, Louisiana and LA (Lower Alabama)?
Well, in that stretch, 50% of the drivers on or south of that highway are driving impaired. So, you're really not in the cradle of DUI awareness.

not that it makes a difference but who in their right mind would tie up their shoe lace on a road?

"Friends don't let friends drive drunk" has been the tag line on PSAs against drunk driving in the States for years. Here's a fun one I found on YouTube from back in the 70s that capitalized on the popularity of Star Wars.

Here's more info on the advertising campaign created by The Ad Council.

I think the biggest difference I have noticed in my time in the US (and that isn't necessarily representative of the entire country), is that people's biggest concern about drink driving is still getting caught.

One of the positives effects I noticed out of the Australian ad campaigns was that they turned it from an event that was legally unacceptable to something that was also socially unacceptable.

On a social level, my experience in the US to date has indicated that it is still a socially acceptable practice (so long as you don't get caught) amongst many people (certainly not all).

We're very proud of our government schooling, yes. And our insurance lobby.

Yeah, most people I know drink and drive without thinking twice about it. Pretty sad. But there are commercials on tv a good bit about it. Unfortunately, a 60 second 'don't drink and drive' is about as useless as a traffic school course preaching about speeding.

I have found down here that a lot of people I know - at least my age - stay away from drink driving. I don't know many who have ever done it.

The older generation probably do it a lot more...but then again they are stubborn old men who are invincible and above the law.
