In recent weeks, both Titans general manager Ruston Webster and coach Mike Munchak said one of their priorities in upgrading the defensive line was finding different types of bodies than their current crop of players.

Specifically, the Titans were targeting bigger, rangier guys with longer reach.

The 6-7, 317-pound Chris Canty certainly fit that profile, but he chose to sign with the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday.

Former Detroit defensive tackle Sammie Lee Hill fits the mold the Titans are looking for as well. At 6-4 and 329 pounds, he is both taller and heavier than any of the Titans’ three primary defensive tackles currently on the roster – 6-1, 300-pound Jurrell Casey, 6-1, 316-pound Mike Martin and 6-3, 275-pound Karl Klug.

But unlike Canty, Hill doesn’t yet have a proven track record.

Hill started as a rookie in 2009, posting 26 tackles in 13 games. But he was pushed into the background when the Lions drafted defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley in the first rounds of the 2010 and 2011 drafts.

Hill played in 15 games last year, starting three, and contributed 15 tackles.

He would appear to have upside, as a talented 26 year-old player who doesn’t have a ton of mileage on him. Hill also could prove versatile, as he played some defensive end in college.

But is he as good or better than Sen’Derrick Marks, who appears likely to leave via free agency? That’s the question the Titans have surely been asking themselves as they make the decision on whether or not to sign him.

One of the stats Pro Football Focus uses to grade defensive tackles is run-stop percentage, which is calculated by taking the total number of stops (defined as a “failed play” for an offense) for a player and dividing it by the number of run snaps played.

Using that measurement, Hill produced a 4.2 percent stop rate, which ranked him toward the lower end of the league. On the other hand, Marks, the man he could be replacing, only ranked one spot higher at 4.3.

Sammie Lee Hill can't be any worse than what Senderrick Marks brought to our team, and he's probably cheaper...yes he's an upgrade.

Any word on this guy? I like his size and he is athletic too. We could use a big run stuffer with quick feet and he should be very cheap!

There's a reason Sammie Hill is available, not cause he sucks, but because Suh & Fairely are better.

More or less. These are the guys you go after. A solid value. Cannot fill the entire roster with big money guys.
