The Colts would feast upon their feeble competition.

Back in day, some traditional rivalries developed. Dallas and the NFC East go back decades. Same with the Rams-49ers rivalry and NE - Miami. They endured expansion and realignment.

For example, I remember the old days when the Rams, Falcons and Saints were all part of the NFC West. Seattle was in the AFC.

    Here, look at 1975, pre-Seattle:

Yep...same reason the Arizona Cardinals were in the NFC East until the last realignment. Rivalries with the Redskins and Cowboys were epic (to me as a kid anyway...the Big Dead was really not that good except for the mid 70s while in St. Louis). I think I remember Bidwell actually resisting the move to the west when it was posed to him during the last realignment.

If the rivalries go so far back that they're worth keeping alive, why can't the league just acknowledge that and be sure the Cowboys face the Giants or Niners each year???

Even though the Cowboys and Niners aren't in the same division they didn't start really having a rivalry or epic games until 1981 and the NFC championship. Then in the 1990's they had some really fierce games when both teams were on top of the NFC.

League bylaws and the CBA probably have some say so in the scheduling. Look at how recently, we hook up everyone in a different division. Could be tough for a team like Dallas to schedule 3 or 4 rivalry games per season plus the scheduled division games. As the maps posted show, there would be no traditional rivalries for Dallas.... who do you think the league would rather see Dallas play? Houston, Denver Phoenix? Or Giants, Redskins, Eagles. Big money on those rivalries.

Rams-Niners rivalry goes back to the early 1950's, when it was a north/south thing in California. Dallas' rivalries with the Giants, Redskins and Eagles started in the 1960's

Those rivalries are traditions and a big part of the game.Imagine how long there has been intense heat between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears. Those two have hated each other for nearly a hundred years or very close to it.The Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins have had one of the most heated rivalries for at least forty or fifty years now.

Another example of how bad the Big Dead was back then...as a kid, I considered Cardinals/Cowboys a big rivalry. However, when you get out of St. Louis apparently they did not exist in the division LOL.

Exactly.Thats why the league will always make sure that no matter how many times they do realign or rename divisions most of these teams with long standing rivalries will always be in the same division.
