Yes, value is great but the team still suffers with a weak secondary. Depending on FA that could work, but tough to say.

Value is everything. Reaching for a position of need for the sake of drafting a need gets you Jake Lockers and Chance Warmacks.

There are plenty of CBs worth a first round pick. Especially at 18.

According to who? How do you know they will be there? How do you know we even have a first round grade on a CB? What if we have someone ranked higher we pass up on because we reach for a CB and he ends up sucking and then nothing is fixed. This is how GMs get fired you can't draft solely based off of need. If value meets need then great it's a beautiful thing but we have seen what drafting our biggest need gets us when better prospects are available. A poverty team and a GM and coach fired. RB wasn't a need but we still took Henry. I wouldn't trade Henry for any of the second round CBs we could have selected instead cause it filled a need. Would you?

I wouldn't have drafted Henry. There are 5 CB's good enough to take at 18, or potentially even trade down to gain more draft capital. When you have a hole as glaring as our secondary you can't ignore it. That is what gets you fired. Foolish to think you can only draft on value. Next year we may have that luxury, not quite this year unless they address in FA. I also would have drafted Carlos Hyde over sankey a couple years ago, but that's beside the point. LOL if you have a guy at a position of need ranked 20th and a guy not at 17th and you're picking 18, you telling me you take the 17th?

If they had him at 17th and he's available, then yes. They had him there for a reason. It was already thought out. The board would be set differently if they valued the 20th prospect over the 17th... thats how boards work.

You can't be oblivious to your team needs and blindly draft by your board, but you can't be so focused on team needs that you pass up much better talent to fill that need.

I'd say in your scenario if you are picking #18 and a guy that fits a need is ranked 20th on your board and the guy ranked #17 on your board is available that you would probably take the guy that fills the need because he is certainly close enough in talent level to #17.

Now if you passed on #17 to take a guy that was ranked 32nd on your board then that would be a bad move. If you feel that you have to fill that need then you need to try to trade down and pick up an extra pick and then make your value/need closer to the board.

No, best players and value aren't always the same. Positions of need factor. Say that 17th player is an RB and 20 is a CB? Still want an RB?

If you ask me a draft board is a ranking of players based on talent, not value. If people suggest value based board that would mean there is nothing but CBs, S, DL, LB, and WR are on the draft board. Not how it works. Lol
